1. Quick List of Exponent Rules
• Zero
• Negative
• Product of Powers
• Power to Power
• Power of Product
• Quotient of Powers
• Power of Quotient
• Fractional
2. x0 = 1
Zero Exponent Rule
3. Zero Exponent Rule
x0 = 1; Any value raised to the zero power equals 1.
4. Negative Exponent Rule
x-y = 1/xy  To remove a negative from an exponent move the term down to the denominator or up to the numerator.
5. x-y = 1/xy
Negative Exponent Rule
6. 1/x-y = xy
Negative Exponent Rule
7. Product of Powers
• xm * xn = xm+n   When multiplying powers with the same base simplify by keeping the base and adding the powers.
8. xm * xn = xm+n
Product of Powers
9. Power to a Power
• (xm)n = xm*n   When a power is the base of another power to simplify multiply the exponents.
10. (xm)n = xm*n
Power to a Power
11. Power of a Product
(ab)m = am * bWhen a product is raised to a power "distribute" the exponent to every factor.
12. (ab)m = am * bm
Power of a Product
13. Quotient of Powers
xm / xn = xm-n   When dividing powers with the same base simplify by keeping the base and subtracting the exponent of the divisor from the exponent of the dividend (Dividend / Divisor = Quotient)
14. xm / xn = xm-n
Quotient of Powers
15. Power of a Quotient
• (a/b)m = am / bm   When a quotient is raised to a power "distribute" the exponent to the dividend and the divisor.
16. (a/b)m = am / bm
Power of a Quotient
17. Fractional Power
xm/n = the nth root of x all raised to the mth power OR the nth root of xm  "n" is the index and "m" is the exponent.
18. xm/n = the nth root of x all raised to the mth power OR the nth root of xm  "n" is the index and "m" is the exponent.
Fractional Power
19. List of Exponent Rules with brief clue what to do
• Zero : One
• Negative : Move down or up
• Product of Powers : Add
• Power to Power : Multiply
• Power of Product : Distribute
• Quotient of Powers : Subtract
• Power of Quotient : Distribute
• Fractional : Denominator is Index, Numerator is Exponent
