  1. Antacids neutralizes gastric acids, raise stomach pH, inactivates Pepsin
    Give for peptic ulcer, indegestion, reflex esophagitis, prevent stress ulcers
    • SE: Constipation, diarrhea, acid rebound between doses, metabolic acidosis
    • Nursing: if med contains sodium, use cautiously in patients with cardiac and renal disease, may decrease absorp of other meds
  2. aluminum hydroxide gel(Amphojel)
    Calcium carbonate(titralac) 
    Aluminum Hydroxide

    SE: consitpation -> impaction, phosphate depletion
    Monitor bowl pattern, check if pt is on sodium restriction, encourage fluids, s/sx PO4 deficiency(malaise, weakness, tremors, bone pain) Shake well
  3. Magneium Hydroxide(MOM)
    Excess can produce N/V/D
    Store at room temp with tight lid to prevent absoprtion of CO2, prolonged and frequent use of cathartic dose can lead to dependence,  use caution in renal pts.
  4. Aluminum Hydroxide
    slight laxative effect
    encourage fluids, use caution with renal pts.
