    Area of the body between the crest and the pelvis region.

    Pertaining to fat.
  4. anabolism
    Procerss of building up or synthesizing substances ( such as proteins ) in a cell.
  5. anterior
    Pertaining to the front of a structure.
  6. catabolism
    Cellular process of breaking down of a complex substance into simple. compounds. Energy is released to the work of the cell.
  7. caudal
    Pertaining to the lower portion of an organ structure.
  8. cell membrane
    Thin and delicture serounding a cell; allows materials to pass in and out.
  9. cephalic
    Pertaining to the head.
  10. cervial
    Pertaining to the neck of the body or lower neck-line portion of the uterus.
  11. chondroma
    Tumor ( benign ) of cartilage.
  12. chondrosarcoma
    Malignant, cancerous tumor of cartilage.
  13. chromsome
    Thread like structure within the nucieus of a cell; contains genetic material ( DNA )
  14. coccygeal
    Pertaining to the tailbone or coccyx.
  15. coccyx
    Tailbone at the end of the spinal or vertebral column.
  16. cranial cavity
    Pertaining to the space within the skull containing the brain and pituitary gland.
  17. craniotomy
    Incision of the skull.
  18. cytoplasm
    All of the sudstance of a cell other than the nucieus.
  19. deep
    Away from the surface of the body or an organ.
  20. diaphragm
    Muscular wall separating the chest and abdoman.
  21. disk ( disc )
    Circular platelike structure composed of cartilage.
  22. distal
    Pertaining to a structure.
  23. dorsal
    Pertaining to the back, or posterior portion of the body.
  24. endoplasmic reticulum
    Network of canals within the cytoplasm of the cell.
  25. epigastric region
    The upper middle region of the abdomen, between the right and left hypochondriac region.
  26. epithelial cells
    Cells arranded in layers and covering or lining a surface of the body.
  27. frontal plane
    A vertical plane passing through the body and dividing it into the front and backportions; coronal plane.
  28. genes
    Segments of DNA that determine hereditary.
  29. histology
    Study of tissue.
  30. hypochondriac region
    An upper abdominal area either side of the epigastric ( middle ) region beneath the cartiliage of the lower rib.
  31. iliac
    Pertaining to the ilium, which is the right or left upper most portion of the hipbone.
  32. inguinal region
    Right and lower region near the groin. Also called iliac region.
  33. interverbral
    Pertaining to between the vertebrae ( backbone )
  34. karyotype
    Classification of chromosomes in the nucleus of a cell determined by a photograph taken during cell division.
  35. larynx
    The voice box.
  36. lateral
    Pertaining to the side.
  37. lumbar region
    In the back of the body, the lumbar region is the lower  back,just above the sacrum. In the front of the body. It is one ofthe two middle lateral regions on either side of the umbilical region ( near the navel ).
  38. lumbosacral
    Pertaining to the lumbar and sacral region of the back.
  39. medial
    Pertaining to the middle or midline of the body.
  40. mediastinum
    Part of the thoracic ( chart ) cavity between the lung.
  41. metabolism
    Chemical processes that occur in cells; including catabolism ( breaking down process ) and anabolism ( building up process )
  42. mitochondria
    Rod-like, thread-like, or granular structures in a cell; site of catabolism and releace of energy.
  43. nucleic
    Pertaining to the nucleus.
  44. nucleus
    Central, controlling structure in a cell; contains chormosomes with DNA ( genetic material ).
  45. pelvic cavity
    Pertaining to the space surrounded by the bone of the hip region.
  46. peritoneum
    Membrane surrounding the organs in the abdoman.
  47. pharynx
    The throat.
  48. pituitary gland
    Edocrine gland at the base of the brain; secretes many hormones that stimulate growth of the bones and influence other glands such as the thyroid, adrenal, and sex glands ( ovaries and testes ).
  49. pleura
    A delicate membrane surrounding each lung and divided into two layers.
  50. pleural cavity
    Space between the layers of the pleura in the chest.
  51. posterior
    Pertaining to the back or dorsal side of the body or structure.
  52. prone
    Lying in a hoizontal position with face downward.
  53. proximal
    Pertaining to a location near the point of attachment or beginning of the organ.
  54. saceal
    Pertaining to the sacrum.
  55. sacrum
    Large, triangular bone below the lumbar vertebrae at the dorsal part of the pelvis.
  56. sagittal plane
    Vertical plane that divides the body into a right and left portion.
  57. sarcoma
    Tumor ( mailignant ) of fleshy tissue such as bone, muscle, fat, and cartiliage.
  58. spinal cavity
    Space surrounded by the backbone or spine.
  59. spinal column
    Series of backbones ( vertebrae ) located on the posterior side of the body.
  60. spinal cord
    The nervous tissue within the spinal cavity.
  61. superficial
    Pertaining to on the surface of the body.
  62. supine
    Lying horizonally on the back with face upward.
  63. thoracic cavity
    The space in the chest surrounded by the fibs, spinal column, breastbone, diaphragm, and chest wall muscles.
  64. thoracotomy
    Incision of the chest.
  65. thyroid gland
    Endocrine gland in the neck; secretes the hormone thyoxine ( T4 ).
  66. trachea
    Windpipe; tube leading from the larynx ( voice box ) to the bronchial tubes.
  67. tracheal
    Pertaining to the trachea.
  68. transverse plane
    Horizontal plane that divides the body into upper and lower portions.
  69. umbilical region
    Region in the area of the navel or umbilicus.
  70. ureter
    one of two tubes carrying urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder.
  71. urethra
    Tube leading from the urinary bladder to the outside of the body.

    Pertaining to the front or anterior of the body.
