    • ACTH
    • bile acids
  3. what is included in a idexx package?

    • a red top with urine
    • slide mailer with blood films
    • a requisition form

    • WBC
    • Platelets
  5. what are serum samples used to evaluate?
    body functions, hormones and organs
  6. Lavender top?
    • contains EDTA anti-coagulant
    • used for plasma sample
    • CBC and DIff test
  7. Blue top?
    • contains sodium citrate anti-coagulant
    • used for plasma sample
    • specialised tests like blood gases
  8. grey top
    • contains sodium fluoride anti-coagulant
    • plasma sample
    • used for blood glucose
  9. green top
    • contains heparin anti-coagulant
    • plasma sample
    • specialised testing and exotics
  10. Red top (tiger top)
    • contains nothing
    • sterile tube
    • can be used for urine, blood, body fluids, small histology.
    • used for whole blood which will be spun down to obtain serum
  11. SST Yellow top
    • contains neutral gel in bottom
    • sterile with no additives
    • whole blood and spun for serum rest of sample will be under the gel plug in bottom
  12. what is a requisition form?
a form used to inform the external lab of which tests you need them to perform on the given samples
  13. what are blood films/smears?
dx tool used to evaluate blood cells
  14. why is it inportant to do blood smears in clinic?
because once the blood is outside the body it starts to change. Also as the smear acompanys a blood film it will show the tech the blood at the time it was drawn as some anti coagulants can sometimes make it difficult to evaluate the sample.
  15. name 3 differnt fecal techniques
    • fecal smeer
    • fecal float fecalyser
    • fecal float centrifuge
  16. Explain the method of fecal float (fecalyser)
small amount of feces is collected with the fecalyser and mixed with a salt solution. A cover slip is placed on top of the fecalyser and The feces then mixes with the salt solution for a minumum of 15 minutes. The ova which will float to the top will be caught on the cover slip and then viewed under a microscope.
  17. explain the method of fecal float (centrifuge)
this method is when the feces is mixed with a sugar solution and then strained so only the liquid portion is left. it is then poured into a centifuge container and spun. a cover slip is placed on top of the solution so the ova float to the top and then is examined under a microscope
  18. explain the method of fecal smear
in this method a small amount of feces is mixed with distilled water on a microscope slide. it should be thin enough so newspaper can be read though it. once mixed a cover slip is placed on top and the slide is examined under a microscope
  19. explain how to do a blood smear
with a blood smear you take a drop of blood and place is on a microscope slide, with another microscope slide you place is along the edge of the drop of blood once it has ran along the width you draw it out quickly along the slide leaving a thin feather like appearnce of blood, dry it quickly and look at under a microscope
  20. explain how to make a microscope urine sample
obtain a urine sample and spin down in the centrifuge. take the tube and remove the urine up to the tablet which will be apparent at the bottom. with another syringe add a drop of the urine to a microscope slide and add one drop of dye. place a cover slip on the urine and examin under a microscope.
