  1. Simple Squamous:
    Characteristics
single layer of flattened cells all touching the basement membrane; all have a free surface
  2. Simple Squamous:
    Funciton
    • diffusion
    • filtration
  3. Simple Squamous:
    Location
    • walls of capillaries, bv, and heart (endothelium)
    • serous membranes (mesothelium)
    • alveoli; air sacs of lungs
  4. Simple Cuboidal:
    Characteristics
single layer of cube-shaped cells with centrally located nuclei; all cells have a free surface and all cells touch the basement membrane
  5. Simple Cuboidal:
    Function:
    • secretion
    • to release a good (useful) product
    • absorption (take back in and take to cells)
  6. Simple Cuboidal:
    Location
    • renal tubules
    • glands
    • lower parts of respiratory tree
  7. Simple Columnar Epithelium
    Characteristics
Single layer of column-shaped cell; nucleus toward the basal region of hte cell; all cells have a free surface and all cells touch the basement membrane
  8. Simple Columnar Epithelium
    Function
    • generally secretion (including mucus)
    • absorption
    • movement (ciliated surface)
  9. Simple Columnar Epithelium
    location
    • human digestive tract
    • many glands of the body
  10. Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
    Characteristics
single layer of column-shaped cells; every cell touches the basement membrane, but not every cell reaches the free surface; nuclei at different levels; appears layered; simle because all toouch the basement membrane
  11. Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
    Function
    • protection
    • secretion of mucous
    • due to cilia, movement of materials
  12. Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
    Location
upper respiratory tract (pharynx, trachea, etc)
  13. Stratified Squamous Epithelium (moist):
    Characteristics
consists of many layers of cells; upper layers squamal shaped; the basal layer touches the basement membrane; all cells are alive becaues of thickness; it protects underlying tissue
  14. Stratified Squamous Epithelium (moist)
    Function
because of thickness, it funcitons in protection of underlying tissues
  15. Stratified Squamous Epithelium (moist)
    Location
    • areas continuous with skin
    • oral cavity, parts of esophagus, etc
  16. Stratified Squamous Epithelium (keratinized):
    characteristics
many layers fo cells; upper layers are squamous shaped; any basal layer touches basement membrane; upper layers of cells are dead and filled with a waterproffing protein called keratin (no nuclei)
  17. Stratified Squamous Epithelium (keratinized)
    Function:
protection of underlying tissue; frist barrier or defense is skin
  18. Stratified Squamous Epithelium (keratinized)
    Location
epidermis; nails; hair; anything derived from epidermis of skin
