Why is there so much biodiversity in tropical rainforests?
- -Near equator
- -alot of rain and sun, allows plants to grow
What is biodiversity?
-Variability among living organisms from all sources, including terrestrial, marine, and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part
- -Complex set of interactions between biotic and abiotic factors which create characteristic functional units
- -(eg. vegetation, soils, wildlife communities, wetlands, forests)
-study of the patterns and mechanisms of distribution of living organisms across space and time
Important concepts in Biogeography
- •Pattern and Process
- •Space and Time
- •Two great engines:
- –Plate tectonics
What factors determine the spatio-temporal distributions of organisms?
- -ruled by history and chance
- 1. Physical
- 2. Biological
-different climatic events affect different species and different regions of the world
