Should we fast rodents and rabbits before anesthesia?
no, because it can cause them to become hypoglycemic due to their high metabolic rates
Should we with hold water from rodents and rabbits before anesthesia?
only with hold 2 hours before induction
Where are injectables give to rodents and rabbits for anesthesia?
- IM (but be careful not to damage muscles and nerves)
Do we use preanesthesia for rodents and rabbits?
no unless we are doing a painful procedure then we will give an analgesic
What is the most important thing to remember when we are putting a rodent and rabbit under anesthesia?
KEEP THEM WARM
What can happen when the body temperature of a rodent or rabbit drops?
makes anesthesia more potent and can cause the patient to become deeper
What is the best way to monitor a rodent or rabbits temperature during anesthesia?
What injectables can we use for rodent or rabbit anesthesia?
When we use Telazol what do we need to remember to do with the eyes?
make sure they are very lubriated
Why is the mg/kg dose higher in rodents and rabbits then in dogs and cats?
they have a higher metabolic rate and metabolize anesthesia much quicker
Which animals should we avoid Ketace in and why?
gerbils because acepromazine can potentially cause seizures
Is there an intranasal form of Ketxyl?
yes, for sure term use
What is the recovery like with Ketxyl?
recovery is prolonged
What is Medetomidine?
- an alpha agonist
- more potent form of xylazine
Can we use Medetomidine by itself?
yes or we can combine it with xylazine
What is the reverser for Medetomidine?
Are Barbituartes safe to use with rodents and rabbits?
yes, but not as safe as the other injectables
How do we administer Barbiturates to rabbits and rodents?
IP and may give IV to larger patients
Why are Barbiturates not as safe as the other injectables?
prolonged anesthesia and prolonged recovery
How big are microliter syringes?
only hold 0.1cc, good for measuring out small amounts
What can we use to induce rodents and rabbits using inhalant anesthesia?
can use mask or chamber
What type of breathing system do we use for rodents and rabbits?
Do we intubate rodents and rabbits?
- we can but not usually
- usually just maintain using a mask
What kind of oxygen rate and vaporizer rate do we use for inducing rodents and rabbits in a chamber?
- high oxygen flow
- turn isoflurane all the way up
Once the animal is down in the induction chamber, what do we do?
- remove from chamber
- mask or intubate
- lower oxygen and inhalant
What are some different things we can use for an induction chamber?
- fish tank
- tuperware container
- bigger mask (put over top of animal)
- storage bin
What are the masking principles?
- if animal freaks out then use chamber first
- make sure the mask is a tight fit
- no leakage
- may create masks from syringe cases
- only need to cover nares
- use higher oxygen flow rate
- higher percent of anesthetic (reduce once anesthetized, if intubate then decrease settings)
- watch for regurgitation
How do we prevent regurgitation when masking a rodent or rabbit down?
- keep animals head up to prevent
- if animal regurgitates - lower head and clean out mouth
Why is intubating a rodent or rabbit difficult?
- small mouth and large tongue
- mouth doesn't open wide
What can we use a urinary catheter for when intubating a rodent or rabbit?
slide urinary catheter over glottis and then slide tube over catheter and then remove catheter
What do we need to monitor when a rodent or rabbit is under anesthesia?
- watch heart and breathing rates
- membrane color
- blink reflexes
- response to pain
What are some analgesics we can use for rodents and rabbits and when do we give them?
- give analgesia right before the procedure
