Who were the main aggressors in WW2?
Germany, Italia and Japan
Before the start of WW2, what agressive actions did Japan take?
They violated their earlier treaty with Russia, and invaded Manchuria. They then invaded China.
Who was Adolf Hitler?
In the 1930's, he rose to power in Germany with the Nazi party. Germany was having severe economic problems at the time, and the German people welcomed him. He became eventually became a ruthless dictator.
How did Hitler feel about the Jews?
He blamed the Jews for everything wrong in Germany, and vowed to get rid of all of them.
When did WW2 begin?
In 1939, when Germany invaded Poland.
What happened in Europe in 1940?
Germany quickly invaded Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium and France. At that time, Germany and Italy controlled much of Europe. They also control most of North Africa.
What was the initial US response to WW2?
The US tried to stay neutral. They did begin supplying ammunition to England.
When was Franklin Roosevelt first elected president? How long did he serve?
He was elected 4 times - in 1932, 1936, 1940 and 1944. His first two terms he had to deal with the depression. WW2 began in 1939, and ended in 1945, the year that Roosevelt died.
What was the 'arsenal of democracy'?
- Instead of joining the Allies in WW2, Roosevelt first suggested loaning, or leasing, miliary equipment to Britain and Russia (also, instead of making them buy it).
- This was called the Lend-Lease Act.
Who were 'isolationists'?
They were people in the US who did not want the US to enter the war.
What event sparked the US to enter WW2?
When Japan surprised attacked the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor, all the public sentiment supported the US entering the war.
When did Japan attack Pearl Harbor? What happened there?
THe attack was on December 7, 1941, a 'date that will live in infamy'. Many US naval ships were sunk, and over 2000 US soilders killed.
When did the US declare war on Japan? What happened days after that?
The US declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941. Three days later, Germany and Italy declared war on the US.
What was happening to Russia during the war?
Germany again attacked Russia, similar to WW1. Again Germany fought wars on the eastern front against Russia, and on the western front against France and Britain.
When the US first entered WW2, where did they try to win?
They first beat back Germany and Italy from North Africa.
When did the Allies finally enter France?
The Allies invaded Normany, France from Britain in the battle of D-Day on June 6, 1944. It was the turning point of the war.
What was the Holocaust?
It was Hitler's aim of trying to exterminate all the Jews from Europe. The Germans killed at least 5 million Jews in their concentration camps during the war.
Besides the Jews, who else did the Germans kill?
They also killed gypsies, homosexuals, intellectuals, communists, physically deformed people and mentally retarded people. They believed only helathy Aryans (German speaking) people should live and rule the world.
Who led the US forces in the war in the Pacific against Japan?

The US had plans to eventually invade Japan. Why did they not do that?
US scientists perfected the atom bomb in 1945. They dropped two atomic bombs on Japan, on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan surrended after the second bomb dropped.
Who was president when the atomic bomb was dropped?
Harry Truman had taken over from Franklin Roosevelt, who had died suddenly.
How did the US economy do during the war?
The US economy grew tremendously during the war, as many new supplies were needed.
When was the United Nations formed?
It was formed in 1945. It evolved from the League of Nations, which was disbanded. The US joined the UN this time.
