  1. Name the main body cavities (6):
    • cranial cavity
    • spinal cavity
    • thoracic cavity
    • diaphragm cavity
    • abdominal cavity
    • pelvic cavity
  2. Proximal
closest to the truck or body
  3. Distal
farthest from the trunk or body
  4. Infererior
of two body parts, one is farthest from the head
  5. Superior
of two body parts, one is closest to the head
  6. Dorsal
    the back
  7. Ventral
    the stomach
  8. Integumentary System
    • -protects the body from injury, dehydration, and some pathogens
    • -controls its temperature; receives some external stimuli
    • -excretes certain wastes

    Ex: hair, nails, and skin
  9. Nervous System
    • detects and coordinates responses to external and internal stimuli
    • intergrates all organ system activities

Ex: Brain, spinal cord, nerves, neuroglia, axons, dendrites, neurons
  10. Muscular System
    • moves the body and internal parts
    • maintains posture
    • generates heat by increasing metabolic activity

    Ex: muscles, actin, and myocin
  11. Skeletal System
    • supports and protects the body parts
    • provides muscle attachment sites
    • produces red blood cells
    • stores calcium and phosphorus

    Ex: bones, tendons, ligments, bruca
  12. Circulatory System (cardiovascular system)
    • rapidly transports materials to and from interstitial fluid and cells
    • helps stabilize pH and temperature

    Ex: Artieries (big-aorta)(small-artrioles)

    •       Veins (big-vena cava)(small-venules)
    •       Capillaries
  13. Endocrine System (invisible system)
    • hormonally controlls body functioning
    • w/nervous system intergrates short and long term activities

Ex: petuitary, thymus, parathyroid, adrenales, and reproductive
  14. Lymphatic System

    Invagination
    • -collects/returns some tissue fluid to the bloodstream
    • -defends the body against infection and tissue damage

    • Ex: lymph nodes and lymph vessels
    • movement of the white blood cells into the blood stream
  15. Respiratory System
    • -rapidly delivers oxygen to the tissue fluid that bathes all living cells
    • -removes carbon dioxide CO2 wates of cells
    • -helps regulate pH

Ex: nasal/oral cavity, lungs, trachea, bronchei, and alveoli
  16. Digestive System
    • ingests food and water
    • chemically breaks down food and absorbs small molecules
    • eliminates food residues

Ex: mouth, pharynx, esophogus, stomach, sm/large intestines, and anus
  17. Urinary System
    • maintains the volume and compsition of internal envrionment
    • excretes excess fluid and bloodborne wastes

    Ex: kidneys, ureters, and bladder
  18. Reproductive System
    • Female:
    • -produces eggs
    • -provides protection after fertilization
    • -nutritive environment for fetus
    • -hormones influence other organ systems

    • Males:
    • -produces and transfers sperm to female
    • -hormones influence other organ systems

Ex: ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, penis, testes
