Dot map
shows distribution of observation sites
Choropleth map
an extrapolation of a dot map data
Rapoport's Rule
-Ranges are increasing, and number of species decreasing with increasing elevation
-Larger ranges in Polar regions
Endemism
species has a small range, only found in one particular place
Types of endemism
1. Neoendemic
-result of recent evolution and speciation in an area a species is found(New species)
2. Paleoendemic
-endemic now, larger range in the past
-Sequoia
Circumpolar taxa
found around the artic or antarctic circles
Pantropical taxa
found in the tropical zone
Temperate taxa
found in middle latitudes
Disjunct distribution
-ranges are divided into two or more geographically separate parts
Amphiregional distribution
taxa have two widely separated geographic ranges
Amphioceanic
taxa occur on opposite sides of ocean
Biopolar
taxa are found in cold polar regions but not in the warmer mid-low latitudes
Biogeographic relicts
once had larger distributions but have become narrow endemics
Glacial relicts
were widespread during the ice age
-Ex. Range of Alpine marmot
Evolutionary relict
-paleoendemics that are survivors of formerly more widespreade and diverse evoultionary lineages
-Ex. Tuatara:lizardlike reptile of New Zealand
Vicariance
an environmental event that divide the ranges of species into geographically isolated distributions
