  1. WBC's
    normal: 5-10k

    elevated: leukocytosis, inflammation or infection, use of steroids, stress

    decreased: immunocompromised
  2. Neutrophils (PMN's)
    Granulocyte (type of phagocyte)

    Body's main defense

    Nl: 45-74%

    Mature segmented or bands (immature)

    Bands: 0-4% nl, a "shift to the left" is 10-12% bands or > 80% bands means bacterial infection/sepsis
  3. Lymphocytes
    T-cells, B-cells

    - function to express antigens, acquired immunity

    Increased: mono, viral or bacterial infections, leukemias, multiple myeloma

    Decreased: AIDS, lupus, renal fx, sepsis
  4. Monocytes
    enter tissues to become macrophages, produce antibodies to activate lymphocytes

    Increased in chronic inflammation, parasitic infection, TB, viral infection
  5. Eosinophils
    in response to allergies

    Increased: allergic reaction, asthma, Hodgkin's disease
  6. Basophils
    Promote inflammatory response, contain histamine.
  7. Critical Hemoglobin parameters
    Hgb <5 TRANSFUSE

    Hbg < 10, anemia w/u

    Hct > 70% URGENT PHLEBOTOMY needed
  8. Normocytic
    80-100fl
  9. Microcytic
    < 80fl
  10. Macrocytic
    >100fl
  11. Critical platelet parameters
    Plts > 600k, further eval req.

    Plts < 50k, increased risk of post-op bleeding

    Plts > 2million RISK OF THROMBOSIS
