What are three models to describe the communication process?
The linear communication model, the interactive model, and the transactional model.
How does the linear communication model work?
Communication flows in one direction, from a starting point to an end point. A sender generates the information, packages it into a message, and chooses a channel or channels to send it to a receiver. Noise (factors in the environment that impede messages from reaching their destination) is a factor.
How does the interactive communication model work?
Communication is a process involving senders and receivers. Transmission is influenced by feedback and fields of experience.
- Feedback - verbal and nonverbal communication that receivers use to indicate reaction and communication.
- Fields of experience - beliefs, attitudes, values, and experiences that each participant brings to a communication event.
How does the transactional communication model work?
The transactional communication model suggests that communication is fundamentally multi-directional. Each participant equally influences the communication behavior of the other participants. There are no senders or receivers; meaning is created collaboratively.
Who wrote one of the earleist texts on interpersonal skills?
Ptah Hotep. He encouraged people to be truthful, kind, and tolerant in their communication. He also encouraged active listening, especially in situations where one lacks experience.
Why has learning about interpersonal communication always been considered so valuable?
Because knowledge of interpersonal skills is essential for maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships.
What are the four aspects of interpersonal comunication?
Interpersoanl communication is dynamic (constantly in motion and changing over time); transactional; primarily dyadic; and creates impact.
During interpersonal encounters, what are the two types of information exchanged?
Content information - actual meaning of the words uttered.
Relationship information - consists of signals indicating how each of you views your relationship.
These signals may indicate whether you consider yourself superior, equal, or inferior to the other person and whether you see the relationship as intimate, acquainted, or estranged.
