Describe the composition of protein
It is made up of amino acids
Each amino acid is made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen
How is protein classified?
1. Animal protein (High biological value protein) eg. meat, fish, eggs, cheese and milk
2. Vegetable protein (Low biological value protein) eg. peas, beans and nuts
What are high biological value protein foods?
These contain all the essential amino acids eg. meat
What arelow biological value protein foods?
These do not have all the essential amino acids eg. vegetables
List four functions of protein in the body
2. Repair of cells
3. Makes enzymes and hormones
4. Gives heat and energy
What do the letters RDA stand for?
Recommended Daily Allowance
What is the RDA of protein?
1 g/kg of body weight
