Describe the composition of carbohydrates
It is made up of chains of sugar called glucose. These are made up of the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
How are carbohydrates classified?
1.Sugar eg. fruit, chocolate and cake
2. Starch eg. bread, potatoes and pasta
3. Fibre eg. brown bread, brown rice and fruit and vegetables
List two functions of carbohydrates in the diet
1. Gives heat and energy
2. Fibre helps prevent constipation
How much fibre should be eaten every day?
25 - 30 grams
What are empty calorie foods?
These are foods that are high in calories but do not have any nutrients in them
Suggest three ways to increase fibre in the diet
1. Eat brown bread instead of white
2. Eat fruit and vegetables
3. Eat high fibre cereals
