    Mechanism of Action
    • Inhibits sodium and water absorption in the kidneys.  Promotes movement of fluid from intracellular into the extracellular space.  Dehydrates brain tissue - effective in management of cerebral edema and reduces intracranial pressure.
    • Decreases cellular edema.
    • Increases urinary output.

    Contraindications
    • Acute pulmonary edema
    • Severe pulmonary congestion
    • Dehydration
    • Hypovolemia
    • Hypersensitivity to the med

    Precautions
    • Rapid administration can cause circulatory overload resulting in CHF
    • Crystallization of the med can occur at lower temperatures (45 degrees)
    • An in-line filter should be used

    • 1.5 - 2.0 g/kg slow IV bolus or infusion
    • Slower rate helps eliminate chances of circulatory overload and CHF
