Explain where protons, neutrons and electrons are found in an atom
Electrons are found in shells (energy levels) around the nucleus. Protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus.
What is the charge and relative mass of a proton
Protons have a charge of +1 and a relative mass of 1
What is the charge and relative mass of a neutron
Protons are neutral (don't have a charge) and have a relative mass of 1
What is the charge and relative mass of an electron?
The charge is -1 and the relative mass is negligible
How many electrons can fit in each of the first three electron shells?
- 1st shell = 2 electrons
- 2nd shell = 8 electrons
- 3rd shell = 8 elctrons
What is the definition of an element?
An element is a substance that contains one type of atom
Phosphorous have 15 electrons what is it's electronic structure?
Why are group 8 elements unreactive
They have a full outer shell of electrons theyfore don't need to react further
What is and ion?
An ion is an atom that has gained or lost one or more electrons and therefore has a charge.
What is the charge on an atom that has lost 2 electrons to become an ion
What states of matter are represented by (s), (l), (g) and (aq)?
- (s) - solid
- (l) - liquid
- (g) - gas
- (aq) - aqueous/dissolved in water
What is a group in the periodic table
It is vertical column of elements
What is a period on the periodic table?
A period is a row of elements (same shell)
What is the mass number?
It is the number of protons and neutrons
What is the atomic number?
It is the number of protons
Where are metals found on the periodic table
Left hand side
