  1. Gluteus Maximus
    O: Ilium posterior to posterior gluteal line; posterior surface of sacrum and coccyx; sacrotuberous ligament

    F.D:  inferior lateral

    I: Iliotibial band to lateral condyle of tibia; gluteal tuberosity

    • A: Extends thigh and assists in
    • lateral rotation

    N: Inferior gluteal nerve

    • S: main extendor of the thigh at the hip ; supeficial to piriformus
  2. Gluteus Medius
    • O: External surface of ilium between
    • anterior and posterior gluteal lines

    F.D:  inferior

    • I: Lateral surface of greater
    • trochanter

    A: Abducts and medially rotates thigh; keep pelvis level

    N: Superior gluteal nerve

    • S: deep to glute max ; ONLY muscle in the intermediate layer of glute muscles
  3. Gluteus Minimus
    • O: External surface of ilium between
    • anterior and inferior gluteal lines

    F.D:  inferior

    I: Anterior surface of greater trochanter

    • A: Abducts and medially rotates
    • thigh; keep pelvis level

    N: Superior gluteal nerve

    • S: deep to glute med ; performs action with glute med
  4. Piriformis
    O: Ant surface of sacrum; Sacrotuberous ligament

    F.D: inferior lateral

    I: Sup border of greater trochanter

    • A: Laterally rotates extended thigh
    • and abducts flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetabulum

    N: Nerve to piriformis

    • S:  deep to glute max
