  1. Flexion
    • bending, decreasing the angle between a joint joint angle is measured from 0° - to specific degrees of motion (example: elbow flexion of 90° is documented 0 °to 90°). Exceptions:
    • Dorsiflexion – flexion of ankle toward the head (up); Plantar flexion – flexion of the ankle away from the head (down).
  2. Extension
    Straightening, increasing the angle in a joint.
  3. Abduction
    moving away from the median plane (midline).
  4. Adduction
    moving toward the median plane (midline).
  5. Rotation
    turning (a part) along it’s longitudinal axis
  6. Circumduction
    movement of the distal end in a circular fashion
  7. Elevation
    movement (of a part) superiorly (example: shrugging of the shoulders)
  8. Depression
    movement (of apart) inferiorly (example: opposite of elevation).
