  1. ABDOMINOPELVIC CAVITY
The second subdivision of the ventral cavity, it contains the kidneys, stomach, liver & gallbladder, small & large intestines, spleen, pancreas and the ovaries & uterus in women
  2. ANATOMY
Study of the structure or morphology of the body and how the body parts are organized
  3. ANTERIOR
    Toward the front
  4. CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
Consists of the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries
  5. CAUDAL
Synonymous with inferior, means toward the tail
  6. CEPHALAD/CRANIAL
Toward the head, synonymous with superior
  7. CONNECTIVE TISSUE
Binds together and supports other tissues and organs, highly specialized
  8. CRANIAL CAVITY
Part of the dorsal cavity. Contains the Brain
  9. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Includes the alimentary canal (mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, rectum, and anus), with its associated glands (salivary, liver, and pancreas). Converts food and eliminates waste
  10. DISTAL
Means away from the point of attachment or origins
  11. DORSAL
Can also be used for posterior, means the back side
  12. ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
    Consists of the endocrine glands
  13. EPITHELIAL TISSUE
Covers surfaces and protects, forms glands, and lines cavities of the body
  14. FRONTAL/CORONAL
Plane is one that divides the anterior (or ventral) and posterior (or dorsal) portions of the body at right angles to the sagittal plane.
  15. HOMEOSTASIS
Is the maintenance of the internal environment of the body?
  16. INFERIOR
    Lowermost or below
  17. INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM
Made up of two layers the epidermis and the dermis. It includes the skin, hair, nails, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands
  18. LATERAL
Means toward the side or away from the midline of the body
  19. LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
Made up of the lymph nodes, the thymus gland, the spleen and the lymph vessels. Functions to drain tissue spaces of excess interstitial fluids and absorb fats from the intestine and carry them to the blood protects body from disease.
  20. MEDIAL
Means nearest the midline of the body
  21. MEDIASTINUM
A space found between the two pleural cavities, contains heart, thymus gland, lymph and blood vessels, trachea, esophagus, and nerves
  22. MIDSAGITTAL
Plane vertically divides the body through the midline into two equal left and right portions or halves, also referred to as a median plane
  23. MUSCLE TISSUE
Is characterized by elongated cells that generate movement by shortening or contacting in a forcible manner. Three types: Skeletal, smooth, cardiac
  24. MUSCULAR SYSTEM
Consists of muscles, fasciae, tendon sheaths, and bursae
  25. NERVOUS SYSTEM
CONSISTS OF THE BRAIN, SPINAL CORD, CRANIAL NERVES, PERIPHERAL NERVES, AND THE SENSORY AND MOTOR STRUCTURES OF THE BODY
  26. NERVOUS TISSUE
Composed of nerve cells forming a coordinating system of fibers connecting the numerous sensory and motor structures of the body
  27. PARIETAL
Refers to the walls of a cavity
  28. PATHOLOGY
The study of the diseases of the body
  29. PERICARDIAL CAVITY
Inside the thoracic cavity contains the heart in a pericardial sac
  30. PHYSIOLOGY
The study of the functions of body parts, what they do and how they do it
  31. PLEURAL CAVITIES
Inside the thoracic cavity contains the two lungs each covered by the pleural membrane
  32. POSTERIOR
    Toward the back
  33. PROTOPLASM
The liquid part of a cell
  34. PROXIMAL
Means nearest the point of attachment or origin
  35. REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Consists of the ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, and vagina in female and the testes, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate gland, penis, and the urethra in the male. Functions include maintenance of sexual characteristics and reproduction
  36. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Is composed of the nasal cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. It brings oxygen to and eliminates carbon dioxide from the blood
  37. SAGITTAL
Plane is any plane parallel to the midsagittal or median plane vertically dividing the body into unequal right and left portions
  38. SKELETAL SYSTEM
Composed of bones, cartilage, and the membranous structures associated with bones
  39. SPINAL CAVITY
Part of the dorsal cavity. Contains the spinal cord
