    Progesterone - maintains uterine lining, reduces contractions, prepares breast for lactation, stimulates testies to produce testosterone

    estrogen - stimulates uterine growth, increases blood flow to uterine vessels, stimulates development of breast ducts for lactation

    • HcG - makes hormones to substain pregnancy
    • HPL - decreases insulin sensativity and utilization of glucose by mother
  20. Fetal Circulation Structures
    • 1. Ductus venosus - diverts some blood from the liver
    • 2. formen ovale - diverts most blood from right atrium directly to left atrium
    • 3. ductus ateriosus - diverts most blood from the pulmonary artery into the aorta
  21. Umbilical Cord
    • develops with the placenta and fetal blood vessels
    • lifeline between the mother
    • two arteries carry blood away from the fetus and one vein returns blood to the fetus
  22. wharton's jelly
    covers and cushions the cord vessel and keeps them seperated
  23. Amniotic Fluid
    • promotes the embryo to float freely
    • maintains even temperature
    • prevents sac from adhering to the fetal skin
    • allows symmetrical growth
    • acts as cushion to protect fetus from injury
