The flashcards below were created by user pilismok on FreezingBlue Flashcards. What would you like to do?

  1. Organic compounds
    compounds that contain C
  2. Example of organic compound
    • Hydrocarbons (compounds containing ┬áC+H): methane or butane
    • Alcohols
    • Aldehydes
    • Ketones
    • Ether
    • Ester
  3. Organic macromolecules
    • 1) Carbohydrates
    • Starch = plants
    • Glycogen = animals
    • 2) Lipids
    • Fats and steroids
    • Fats are maid of 3 fatty acids and 1 glycerol
    • Saturated fat = single bond
    • Unsaturated = double or triple bond
    • 3) Proteins
    • are made up of amino acids (~20 AA)
    • sequence of AA determines the properties of protein
    • EX: enzymes, collagen(cartilage, tendon, bones), keratin(hair and nails)
    • 4) Nucleic acids
  4. Test for presence of starch
Lugol's solution (iodine) = turns black in the presence of starch
  5. Test for monosaccharides
Benedict's solution, turns brick red when heated with simple sugar
  6. Test for presence of proteins
    Biuret solution
