  1. What is a proton?
Positive charge, located in the nucleus of atom
  2. What is an electron?
Negative charge, located orbiting around the nucleus
  3. What is a neutron?
Neutral charge, located in the nucleus of atom
  4. What is main difference between elements?
the number of protons (atomic number)
  5. What does the noble elements do? (reaction wise)
    Nothing- they are stable.
  6. Periodic table:
Metals gain or lose electrons, thus forming____?
    Metals lose electrons, forming cations

Metals are located on left side (except for H) below the staircase line
  7. Periodic table:
Nonmetals gain or lose electrons, thus forming_____?
    Nonmetals gain electrons, forming anions.

Nonmetals are located to the right and above the staircase line
  8. What kind of reactions do noble elements have?
  9. Hydrogen forms what kind of ion? and/or what kind of bond?
H forms cation, or covalent bond.
  10. What is oxidation?
the loss of HYDROGEN ATOMS (not ions, it is a reduction rx)
  11. Acid
    they lose H ions
  12. Base
    they accept H ions
  13. pH Scale
What are the numbers for acid vs base?
    • Acid 0-5
    • Neutral 6-8
    • Base 9-14
  14. pH scale:
what is the magnitude or scale between numbers?
every time you move a space- multiply by 10 (if moving two spaces this is difference of 100)

Answer to his Q. is 11
  15. States of Matter:
    Describe solid state
    • Holds it's shape, fixed volume
    • speed of particles are slow
  16. States of Matter:
    Describe liquid state
    • takes the shape of it's container
    • free surface
    • fixed volume
    • speed of particles are fairly fast (faster than a solid state but slower than a gas state)
  17. States of Matter:
    Describe gas state
    • takes shape of the container
    • volume of the container
    • speed of particles are fast
  18. What is a solution?
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. A solution may exist in any phase.
  19. Define Hydrogen Bonds
The attraction between the positive part of one molecule and the negative part of another
  20. Equilibrium
It refers to the speed/rate of change.  The number of molecules coming in, must be the same as the number of molecules going out.
  21. what is a hydrocarbon?
a molecule that contains only H and C
  22. Saturated means....
molecule is full of H !!!
  23. Unsaturated means....
molecules probably have double bond, basically they are NOT full of H
  24. -OH
    R group in an alcohol
  25. -COOH
    R group of acids
  26. -COH
    R group of Aldehydes
  27.  C=O
    R group of Ketone
  28. -NH2
    R group of Amine
  29. Image Upload

(poly means many cyclos, eg sterols.  Hetero means one ring, substituted means cyclo with group attached to it)
  30. hydrophobic
     eg fatty acids
  31. sugars and starches
     eg monosaccharides (simple sugar)
          disaccharides (two sugars)
          polysaccharides (many sugars)
  32. many amino acids (20 types) aka polypeptides
  33. 3 fatty acids + glycerol
    What is a triglyceride? (fat)
  34. 2 fatty acids + glycerol
    what is a diglyceride
  35. 1 fatty acids + glycerol
    what is a monoglyceride?
  36. many monosaccharides (sugars)
    what is a polysaccharide
  37. 2 monosaccharides
    what is a disaccharide
  38. > 50 amino acids
    what is a protein
  39. many amino acids
    what is polypeptide
  40. 2 amino acid
