  1. aerotitis media
    • inflammation of the middle ear from changes in atmospheric pressure¬†
    • often occurs with frequent air travel
  2. antibiotic
    • a drug that inhibits the growth of or destroys microorganisms¬†
    • used to treat diseases caused by bacteria (ex otitis media)
  3. antihistamine
a drug that blocks the effects of histamine
  4. anti-inflammatory
    a drug that reduces inflammation
  5. audiogram
    record of hearing measurement
  6. acous/o
  7. aer/o
    air or gas
  8. aur/i
  9. cerumin/o
  10. salping/o
    Eustachian tube or uterine tube
  11. tympan/o
  12. -acusis
    hearing condition
  13. audiologist
health professional who specializes in the study of hearing impairments
  14. audiometer
    instrument to measure hearing
  15. auditory acuity testing
    • physical assessment of hearing
    • useful in differentiating between conductive and sensorineural hearing loss
  16. auditory tube
tube connecting the middle ear to the pharynx (throat)
  17. cerumen
a waxy substance secrete by glands located through out the external canal
  18. cerumen impaction
excessive buildup of wax in the ear that often reduces hearing acuity, especially in the elderly persons
  19. cochlear implant
an electronic device implanted in the cochlea that provides sound perception to pts with severe or profound sensorineural (nerve) hearing loss in both ears
  20. conductive hearing loss
hearing impairment caused by interference with sound or vibratory energy in the external canal, middle ear, or ossicles
  21. deafness
general term for partial or complete loss of hearing
  22. decongestant
a drug that reduces congestion and swelling of the membranes, such as those of the nose and Eustachian tube in an infection
  23. ear lavage
irrigation of the external ear canal, often to remove excessive buildup of cerumen
  24. eustachian obstruction
blockage of the eustachian tube, usually as a result of infection, as in otitis media
  25. Eustachian tube
tube connecting the middle ear to the pharynx (throat)
  26. external auditory meatus or canal
external passage for sounds collected from the pinna to the tympanum
  27. external ear
out structures of the ear that collect sound
  28. histamine
    • a regulatory body substance release in allergic rxns, causing swelling and inflammation of the tissues
    • seen in hay fever and urticaria (hives)
  29. Incus
    • anvil
    • middle of the three auditory ossicles of the middle ear
  30. inner ear/ labyrinth
    • intricate, fluid-filled, intercommunicating bony and membranous passages that function in hearing by relaying sound waves to auditory nerve fibers on a path to the brain for interpretation
    • also sense body movement and position to maintain balance and equilibrium
    • labyrinth- maze
  31. malleus
    • hammer
    • first of the three auditory ossicles of the middle ear
  32. middle ear
structures in the middle of the ear that vicrate sound from tympanic membrane to the inner ear
  33. mixed hearing loss
combination of the sensorineural and conductive hearing loss
  34. myringitis
    inflammation of the eardrum
  35. organ of corti
    • structure located in the cochlea
    • contains receptors (hair cells) the receive vibrations and generate nerve impulses for hearing
  36. otalgia
  37. otitis externa
inflammation of the external auditory meatus (canal)
  38. otitis media
    inflammation of the middle ear
  39. otoplasty
surgical repair of the external ear
  40. otorrhagia
    bleeding from the ear
  41. otorrhea
    purulent drainage from the ear
  42. otoscopy
use of an otoscope to examine the external auditory canal and tympanic membrane
  43. pinna
    • auricle (little ear)
    • projected part of the external ear
    • pinna= feather
  44. presbyacusis/ presbycusis
    hearing impairment in old age
  45. saccule
    • the smaller of two sacs within the membranous labyrinth of the vestibule in the inner ear¬†
    • sacculus= small bag
  46. semicircular canals
three canals within the inner ear that contain specialized receptor cells that generate nerve impulses with body movement
  47. sensorineural hearing loss
hearing impairment caused by lesions or dysfunction of the cochlea or auditory
