electricity chapter 10

  1. electricity
    • electrons and their movements
    • used to power homes and everything else
  2. static charge
    • electricity that isn't in a circuit
    • lightning is an example
    • charging by friction, contact and induction
  3. charging by friction
    • the use of friction to change the charges on two objects by rubbing them together
    • higher electrostatic=higher pull on electrons
  4. electrostatic series
a list of items in the order in which they hold onto electrons
  5. insulator
    • a material that doesn't conduct electricity well
    • opposite of conductor
  6. conductor
    • a material that conducts electricity well
    • opposite of insulator
  7. semiconductor
    • something that is ok at conducting electricity
    • eg. silicon
    • useful for electronics
  8. ground
    • an object that neutralizes other objects
    • eg. the ground!
  9. electroscope
    • a device used for measuring charge
    • metal leaf and pith ball
  10. charging by contact
    • touching two objects with different charges together
    • equilibrium created, both objects gain mild charge
  11. laws of electric charges
    • same charges repel
    • different charges attract
    • neutral loves everyone
  12. induced charge separation
when electrons move around in an object because another charged object is in the vicinity
  13. ion
    • a charged atom
    • kinda simple
  14. lightning rod
    • rod used to stop electrocution of buildings
    • usually large
    • conducts electricity to ground
  15. electrostatic precipitator
    • used to catch dust particles through charges
    • especially in factories and chimneys of large buildings
  16. van de graaff generator
    • creates charges through friction
    • used to accelerate particles
    • really awesome!
  17. radiation dosimeter
    • a device for measuring radiation by detecting charges
    • helpful for people who get radiation exposure
