    • Windows Memory Diagnostic- Doesn’t do a lot of changing, use if memory is suspected as problem
    • System restore- use if you need to roll back to previously saved restore point

    c. Boot Mgr reads settings in BCD ( Boot Configuration Data file) and loads Windows Boot Loader.
  22. 27: List the five RE options in the order in which the textbook recommends using them, and explain why the textbook recommends this order:
    • The book lists these in order of least intrusive ways to repair your system:
    • Startup Repair This can sometimes repair startup problems caused by corrupted or missing system files.
    • Windows Memory Diagnostic Use when you suspect the memory module is corrupted
    • System Restore Used to restore to previously saved restore point. Can sometimes fix a problem with corrupted Windows settings, corrupted device drivers, and corrupted programs.
    • Command Prompt Use if you suspect the hard drive is corrupted, open command prompt window and use Chkdsk with the /r parameter. Registry keys can be restored, once they have been properly backed up.
    • System Image Recovery Use as last resort to restore the entire Windows volumes to this image; make every attempt to backup any data files from the hard drive.
  23. 30: What happens if you press the spacebar while Windows is booting?
The Windows Boot Manager screen appears
  24. Startup Bios turns control over to MBR program stored in first sector of the hard drive
    • MBR searches system partition table, looking for active partition, finds it and loads Windows Boot Manager
    • Boot Mgr reads settings in BCD (Boot Configuration Data file) and loads Windows Boot Loader.
  25. * Computer doesn't seem to have power
Verify power supply, checking connections and switches
  26. * Error message appears before Windows starts
Restart the system, while listening carefully for beeps, count the number of beeps, then look up (counted beeps) on the motherboard's Manufacture website
  27. * Startup BIOS can't find hard drive
    • Check BIOS setup, verify BIOS detects the drive correctly
    • Check Auto detection setting
    • Check power and data cable to hard drive
  28. * Blank screen
    try rebooting system
  29. * Startup BIOS can find hard drive, but can't read it or can't find required files

  31. *Windows RE can's find Windows
    • Installation
    • Select Repair your computer and attempt to launch Windows RE.
    • If Windows RE can't launch from hard drive, but BIOS still recognizes hard drive, the drive partitions and system files might be corrupted.
    • After trying each item in this list, reboot the system to verify if system has been corrected:
    • Run Startup Recovery, System Restore, Restart system & press F8 to select Advanced Boot Options Menu.
    • If this menu doesn't appear, it could be a corrupted Boot sector.
