  1. What are the basic assumptions underlying science: Determinism
    • behavior is caused by specific events
    • not "everything happens for a reason"
    • events do not just occur-there are antecedent (precede that come before) events
    • science is the search for those causes
  2. What are the basic assumptions underlying science: Reality in nature
assumption that the things we see, hear, feel and taste are real and have substance
  3. What are the basic assumptions underlying science: Rationality
there is a rational basis for events that occur in nature that can be understood (behavior/causes) through the use of logical thinking
  4. What are the basic assumptions underlying science: Regularity
    • evens in nature follow the same laws and occur the same way at all times and places
    • may not be easy but it is possible through scientific method
    • behavior (esp human) is multidetermined (more than one cause) and often interacting with other causes
