  1. Describe the normal flower structure
    • A flower has two layers , the outermost layer is known as a sepal . It is green and leaf like ,protects the flower
    • The inner layer petals , colorful and attracts pollinators
    • sepals + petals =Perianth
    • Male parts  - stamen , anthers produce pollen and have filaments
    • Female parts - stigma , style and ovary
    • Reproduction : pollen from anther goes to stigma which then produces sperm cells , these travel down the style to the ovary where zygote forms
  2. Describe the family of proteacea and give examples
    • Three examles : Banksia, Grevilles , Macadamia
    • They have a large southern distribution
    • found in heathland and woodland
    • were in gondwana
  3. Describe the structure of the proteacea flower
    • The proteacea flower has no sepal and petal separation and thus have tepals
    • They have nectar glands that produce nectar
    • Only one stamen
    • Anthers attached to the the perianth
    • Have secondary pollen presentation - goes through male phase when flower is closed and then female phase
  4. Describe the fruit and flower of the Banksia
    • Banskia flowers are solid to allow perching
    • Their pollinators include -honey eaters  honey possum
    • Banksia have follicles as fruit which only open during maturity
    • Each follicle has two seeds
    • used for food
  5. Define Legumes and give examples
    • Legumes are defined by having their fruits in a pod
    • three families : fabacea, wattles and cassias
    • 1100 species
    • trees and shrubs
  6. Describe the typical structure of a fabacea flower
    • It has a standard petal , keel and wind petals.
    • The reproductive parts such as the ovary and stamen tucked away in the keel and wind petal
    • Standard Petal is showy so pollinators such as bees land on it and expose the keel so as to have pollen drop on them
  7. Describe Acacias
    • Dominant in semi arid and arid regions but can be found in rain forests
    • used as gum , can be eaten
    • Nitrogen Fixer
  8. Describe the unique structure of Acacia leaves
    • It has two different types of leaves :
    • bi pinnate : compound leaves
    • phylodes : adult leaves
    • flowers are of little globular flowers
    • pollen grains come in cluster of flowers
