  1. Estradiol
    Estrogen

    Use: HRT, menopause, female hypogonadism

    AE: GI, weight gain, period-like symp, chloasma, DVT, blood clots

    Caution: d/n smoke, d/n take w grapefruit juice, d/n st john's wort
  2. Raloxifene (Evista)
    Estrogen Receptor Modulators

    Actions: Acts on estrogen receptors to increase bone density

    Use: postmeno osteoporosis

    AE: GI, fluid balence, estrogen receptors stim (hot flashes, rash, edema, vag bleed)

    Caution: d/n warfarin (decrease PT), d/n smoke, d/n hx of ven thrombosis
  3. Norethindrone acetate (Aygestin)
    Progestins

    Action: prolif endomet => secre endometr; inhibit FSH & LH; prev follicle mat & ovul; inhibit uter contract

    Use: contraception, 1st & 2nd amenorrhea, fertility protocols

    AE: varies based on route

    • Levonorgestrel (Plan B, Mirena)
    • - take within 72 hrs
  4. Clomiphene
    Fertility Drugs

    Action: stim hypoth to increase FSH & LH

    Uses: infertility in men & women

    AE: increase multiple birth & defects; ovarian overstim: uter bleed, ovar enlarge, gynecomastia (manboobs), headache, fluid reten, nausea, bloating
  5. Oxytocin (Pitocin)
    Uterine Motility drugs - Oxytocics

    Action: affects neuroreceptor sites

    Uses: prev & treat uterine atone after delivery; increase contractions for delivery; inevit or incompl abortions; 2nd trim abortions

    AE: excessive effects, GI, headache, BP change, water intoxication

    Contra: CPD, unfav fetal position, early preg, prev c-section, complete uterine atony, hepatic or renal impair
  6. Dinoprostone
    Uterine Motility drugs - Abortifacients

    Use: term preg 12-20 wks, prev implantation

    AE: perforated uterus/uterine rupture

    • Nursing: uterine tone, involution, bleeding => massage uterus
    • Monitor: VS, CBC, pain
  7. Terbutaline, Ritodrine
    Uterine Motility drugs - Tocolytics

    Action: beta-spec adrenergic agonists, relax uterine muscles, prev contract

    Use: after 20 wks gestation

    AE:
  8. Duratest, Testoderm
    • Androgens: Testosterone
    • - Mimics testosterone, develop male 2nd char

    Use: Hypogonadism, breast cancer

    • Action: ↑ retention N, Na, K
    • ↓excretion Ca
    • ↑ protein anabolism
    • ↓ protein catabolism
    • ↑ RBC

    AE: acne, edema, hirsutism; 2nd male char; testicular atrophy, antiestrogen effects (flushing, nervous, vaginitis, emotional labiality)

    Caution: Liver dysfunction or cardiac disease

    • Nursing:
    • Labs: thyroid function, electrolytes, creatinine, liver function, cardiac function, cholest levels

    Assess: long bone (epiphyseal closure); skin, & mental status
  9. Oxandrolone
    • Anabolic Steroids
    • - tissue building w/o androgenic effect
    • - ↑ anabolic, ↓ catabolic

    - ↑ RBC mass & hemoglobin

    Use: promote weight gain, tissue repair, ↑ protein anabolism, treat anemias, treat angioedema

    AE: cardiomyopathy, hepatic carcinoma, sexual dysfunction

    D2D: oral anticoagulants, antidiabetics
  10. Sildenafil (Viagra)
    • Erectile Dysfunction Agents
    • - prostaglandin => relax smooth muscles
    • - PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type 5 receptors) increases nitrous oxide

    Use: pulmonary hypertension
