  1. Interphase
    Chromosomes duplicate and the copies remain attached to each other
  2. Prophase
    in the nucleus chromosomes condense and becomes invisible in the cytoplasm and spindle fiber forms
  3. Metaphase
    Chromosomes align along the equator of the cell at the metaphase plate
  4. Anaphase
    chromatids are separated and attached to opposite poles called chromosomes
  5. Telephase
    nuclear membranes form around each of the two sets of chromosomes, they begin to spread out and the spindle breaks down
  6. Cytokinesis
    two cells split into two daughter cells each with the same # of chromosomes as the parent
