She shows you one cause of her distraught - her shoes tied together and thrown over a tree branch that is out of her reach. She strongly asserts that she knows who are behind her troubles, a group of teenagers, that may have caused her problems before. She demands that you go arrest them now.

    RESPOND:
    (intro)

Good day madam. I am constable Leung from the toronto police services.

    (empathy)

I see that you are very upset and can certainly see why.

    (relate)

Anyone would be angry when someone violates their home, and have to endure someone's prank like having your shoes thrown over the branch..

    (ask to do)

BUT, I need you to take a few breaths and calmly tell me what happened here so that I can help you to the best that I can. Please tell me why do you think the kids are involved, and if there are any other things that you believe are done the kids.

    (offer help)

If you wish, I can arrange someone from social services or victim services to give you a call and follow up on your situation with you after I leave.  So. Please tell me what happened.
  2. You receive a dispatch call to a domestic dispute happening in a couple's home. Neighbours report loud screaming, shooting, and sound of objects breaking and smashing. You arrive at the scene and the couple are fighting intensively in the living room. They do not notice your entrance at first, as you witness the fighting, you see both parties are becoming increasingly agitated. The man picks up a drink from the coffee table in front of him, says, "fuck you bitch! i don't fucking care anymore." and drops the glass onto the table shattering it. He turns to look at you and asks, "who the fuck are you?! Look, this is our problem, we do not need you here, just get the fuck out." The women backs him up and agrees that this is a personal matter and that you should leave.

    Respond:
    (intro)

Well, Sir, Madam. I am constable leung from the toronto police services.

    (why here)

I am here because I received a call about the two of you fighting and I am here in response to that call.

    (empathy+relate)

I see that both you are in a very difficult situation right now... as a husband myself, i understand the frustration and anger that can be built up when your partner disagrees with you.

    (ask to do)

BUT, I will need both of you to take a few breaths and calm down first. There is no use screaming and shouting over a problem.

    (offer help)

Let's solve it together, and I am here to help. So, why don't we sit down and let's calmly talk this out. I guess I'll begin with, "Please tell me what happened?"
  3. Dispatch has send you to notify a mother of 3 children about what happened to her youngest daughter earlier today. An accident happened at the local primary school where the 8 year old year daughter was rolled over by the school's school-bus. At the sight of the accident, the school notified paramedics, and the girl was rushed to hospital. The girl did not survive her injuries and passed away. As you arrive at the mother's home you see her other children leisurely playing in the front year. The kids, especially the boys, are excited to a real police officer up close. As you approach the mother on theporch, she senses that something is wrong and sends her children inside the house. She asks why are you here and that you sit with her at the front porch.

    Respond:
    (intro)

Madam, I'm constable leung from the toronto police services.

    (why here)

I'm here because there has been an accident at lilly's school... lilly was caught in an accident with the school bus and was injured. She was immediately rushed to hospital where medical staff attended to her. But, sadly, she did not make it and succumbed to her injuries.

    (empathy)

My heart is broken just telling you this

    (relate)

I am a father myself and I can only imagine the pain you are going through.

    (ask to do)

Please remain calm and composed for the moment and tell the other children that you will need to leave the house for a while. i will need to take you to the hospital where lilly is and complete the folllow up there.

    (offer help)

If there is anything i can do for you right, just let me know. If you would like me to contact a social worker for you so that you can have someone to talk to about this, i'll call them right away.
  4. You are manning the front desk to the police station. It is almost 6 in the evening when an obviously angry, and fustrated, mother drags a child of 12 years old into the station and screams, "what is your problem?!" The child complains loudly that she is hurting him and tries to shake the woman's grip off from his arm. The mother confesses that she cannot stand this and that she has run out of ideas on how to disapline her son. She says that her son has done nothing but slouch in front of the tv since getting back from school, and when she asks that he either do his homework or help with the chorus, he runs outside only to come back saying he broke somebody's window. The child retorts that it's not his fault and violently shakes off his mother's grip, and crosses his arms and stares away from his mother and you. His mother gives up and quietly looks at you with the expression of asking that you deal with the situation.

    Respond:
    (intro)

Hello Young man, I am constable leung of the toronto police services. What's your name?

    (why here)

I see that there are some difficulties between you and your mother.

    (empathy+relate situation)

Well, I understand how upset you must feel now. I certainly remember how I felt when I was your age - not wanting to do homework and just wanting to play.

    (ask to do)

But, you should know that there is a time for everything. A time for play and a time for study. You should also know that you are under the loving care of your mother, and so should be obedient to her as not to make her life, and your's, difficult. Can you do that for me young man? Can you show me that you are a responsible person capable of handling themselves and not cause trouble to others?

    (offer help)

In the mean time, please show me to the house where your mother said the window was broken. We'll deal with it together and see what needs to be fixed.
