  1. Windows and Linux machines are being configured to share a LUN. The Windows machines have no prolbem seeing and writing to the LUN, but once LInux machines write to the LUN, Windows machines can no longer do so. What's the problem?
Windows operating system typically writes a disk signature on storage volumes that they see. Zoning can prevent machines from seeing the wrong volumes.
  2. How many LUNs are supported by the VMkernal
    256 (0-255)
  3. What types of FCoE cards does vSphere 5.0 support?
    • Hardware FCoE (called a converged network adapter or CNA)
    • Software FCoE (called a NIC with FCoE support)
  4. How do you configure Software FCoE?
    • 1. Connect VMKernal  to teh physical FCoE NIC
    • 2. VLAN ID and Priority are discovered during FCoE initialization (priority is not configured)
    • 3. Bind the vmnic to the sofware FCoE adapter: configuration > storage adapters link > Add
    • Once bound a new vmhba dadpter is created.
  5. How many network adapter ports can be used for software FCoE
Up to four; exact number will depend on the number of physical FCoE NIC ports configured on the host.
  6. How do you add a VMFS datastore?
    • Select storage type disk/lun
    • select available lun
    • specify datastore name
    • specify data store size; use full or partial lun
  7. What are the two ways of expanding a VMFS data store?
    • Add an extent to the datastore
    • Expand the datastore on in the extent
  8. What are the limits of the two approaches in expanding a VMFS datastore?
    • Add an extent to the datastore0
    • Up to 32 LUNS (extents) with each extent of up to 64TB

    • Expand the datastore on in the extent
    • A LUN can be expanded any number of times up to 64 TB
  9. What steps should you take before increasing the size of a VMFS datastore?
    • Rescan storage
    • Quiesce I/O
    • Record the unique identifier of the volume you want to expand
  10. What three path selection policies are offered by default with vSphere 5?
Fixed - Host always used preferred path to the disk.  Default for active-active arrays

MRU - Host uses most recent path to disk until this becomes unavailable. Default for active-passive arrays.

Round Robin - Hosts rotates through available paths. Offers path failover and load balancing across paths. Must check w/ storage vendors to see if supported.
  11. Define "Fixed" in the context of path selection policies:
Fixed - Host always used preferred path to the disk.  Default for active-active arrays
  12. Define "MRU" in the context of path selection polices
MRU - Most Recent Used - Host uses most recent path to disk until this becomes unavailable. Default for active-passive arrays.
  13. Define "Round Robin" in the context of path selection policies
Round Robin - Hosts rotates through available paths. Offers path failover and load balancing across paths. Must check w/ storage vendors to see if supported.
  14. What is the difference between VSA and VSA for Essentials PLus?
VSA offer centralized management of multiple VSA clusters.
  15. What are the components to a VSA cluster?
    • ESXi 5.1 hosts = 2 or 3
    • vCenter Server 5.1 = runs VSA Manager and VSA Cluster Service (in 2 node VSAs). It can run as a VM on an ESXi host  running a VSA instance
    • vSphere Client = manages VSA through the VSA manager tab
  16. What protocol is used to access data in the VSA cluster|?
    NFS
  17. What are the cluster configuration requirements for VSA?
    • All ESXi host must have the same hardare configuration:
    • - CPU: 64 bit x86 CPU 2GHz or higher
    • - Memory: 24 GB recommend 72 GB max
    • - Hard Disks:  all of the same model and capacity - 3 TB disks, six 2TB or eight 2 TB disks
    • - RAID:  RAID 5/6 or 10
  18. What host requirements are there specific to the vSphere environment for participating in a VSA cluster?
    • vSphere 5.1
    • None participate in another cluster
    • Only the defautl vSS or port groups
    • Unique static IP in the same subnet as vCenter Server IP Address
    • No deployed VMs
  19. What are the two types of VSA maintenance modes?
    • Whole VSA cluster maintenance mode where the entire cluster is taken offline.
    • Single VSA node maintenance mode where only a VSA node is taken offline. Since the volume is still online (through the other nodes) the VMs on that volume DO NOT need to be migrated.
  20. An admin wants to run a VSA Cluster on three nodes without the VSA cluster service installed on the vCenter Server. Will there be a problem?
    A. No, VSA Cluster Service is only needed with two nodes-VSAs
    B. Yes, VSA Cluster services is needed with all VSAs
No, VSA Cluster Service is only needed with two nodes-VSAs
  21. You'd like to clone a VM, but end up with IP address conflicts. What tool should you use next time?
VM running OSes before Windows 2008 reqwurie Microsoft Sysprep tool to be instlaled on the vCenter Server system. Sysprep is built into Windows 2008  and Vista.

    • Linux requires:
    • - Perl installed
    • - Clone/Templatehas root volume formatted with ext2, ext3, or ReiserFS file system
  22. What are the two compatibility modes supported by RDM

    • - Max size is 64 TB

    • Virtual compatibiltiy
    • - VMs can use snapshots and other advanced features
    • - LUNs behave as virtual disk
    • - Can clone, templated or migrated
  23. You've increased the size of a virtual disk, but Windows doesn't report that change. What can you do?
use the diskpart utility to enable the fiel system to use the space. Diskpart does not work on a running system.
  24. You'd like to migrate a vm between virtual data centers, what migration type can you use?
    cold or suspended

    Run CPUID utility
  30. How does storage vMotion copy data?
    • 1. VMkernal data mover or
