  1. 6 Vital Functions of Integumentary System
    • 1. Protection from pathogens
    • 2. Keeps the body from drying out
    • 3. Stores fatty tissue for energy
    • 4. Produces VD
    • 5. Sensory input
    • 6. Regulates body temperature
  2. Three Layers of the Skin:
    • Epidermis
    • Dermis (corium)
    • Subcutaneous Fascia (hypodermis)
  3. Facts about the Epidermis:
5 Layers: Stratum corneum, lucidum, granulosum, spinosum, basale

*Cells start in basale layer and push up to corneum layer and shed

    * Cells are flat, scaly, keratinizied stratified squamous epithelial cells
  4. Facts about the Dermis:
    • * Below the epidermis
    • * Thicker than epidermis
    • * Dense, irregular connective tissue
    • * Contains:
    •  - Capillaries
    • - Collagenous and elastic fibers
    • - Involuntary muscles
    • - Nerve Endings
    • - Lymph vessels
    • - Hair follicles
    • - Sudoriferous (sweat) glands
    • - Sebaceous (oil) glands
  5. Subcutaneous Fascia (third skin layer)
    *Hypodermis*
    • * Deepest layer of skin
    • * Elastic/fibrous connective & fatty tissue
    • * contains lypocytes (fat cells)
    • * Attached to muscle
  6. 3 Burn Complications:
    • * Bacterial Infections
    • * Fluid Loss
    • * Heat Loss
  7. Nails:
    • * Specialized Epithelial Cells
    • * Nail Bed part of Epidermis
    • * Become keratinized (cells dry, shrink, push to surface, filled with protein keratin)
    • * Lunula (white half moon) thick cells
  8. Peripheral Perfusion (blood flow):
    • * Pink color of nail aids in assessment of blood flow to the extremities
    • * Test by capillary refill time
  9. Hair:
    • * Composed of Keratin (like nails)
    • * Regulates body temperature
    • * Functions as sensor to detect things (bugs)
    • * Eyelashes protect eyes
    • * Nose hair filters particulate matter
  10. Temperature Regulation:
When your temperature RISES, your body signals the blood vessels in the skin to get...
    Larger - Vasodilation
  11. Temperature Regulation:
When cold and the body needs to warm up, the peripheral blood vessels will become....
    Smaller- Vasoconstrict
  12. One layer of cells:
    simple
  13. two or more layers of cells:
    stratified
  14. Squamos:
    thin, flattened cells
  15. cuboidal:
    cube like shaped cells
  16. columnar:
    elongated cells
  17. Epithelial Cells:
Tightly packed cells that form an effective barrier
  18. What is collagen?
    • - Most abundant protein in the body
    • - makes up connective tissue & extracellular matrix
    • - Very strong, made of bundles of fibers
    • - supports skin and body, prevents tissues from stretching
  19. What is elastin?
    • - protein found in extracellular matrix
    • - provides skin and organs with elasticity
