What is VTP?
VTP allows a network manager to configure a switch so that it will propagate VLAN configurations to other switches in the network.
What are normal-range VLANS?
VLAN IDs 1 to 1005
Are extended range VLANs supported by VTP?
Where does VTP store VLAN configurations?
VLAN database called vlan.dat
What are some VTP benefits?
- - VLAN configurastion consistency across the network.
- - Accrurate tracking and monitoring of VLANs
- - Dynamic reporting of added VLANs across a network
- - Dynamic trunk configuration when VLANs are added to the network
What are the VTP components?
VTP Domain, VTP Advertisements, VTP Modes, VTP Server, VTP Client, VTP Transparent, and VTP Pruning.
What is VTP Domain?
Consists of one or more interconnected switches. All switches in a domain share VLAN configuration details using VTP advertisements. A router or Layer 3 switch defines the boundary of each domain.
What is VTP Advertisements?
VTP uses a hierarchy of advertisements to distribute and synchronize VLAN configurations across the network.
What is VTP Modes?
A switch can be configured in one of three modes: server, client, or transparent.
What is VTP Server?
VTP servers advertise the VTP domain VLAN information to other VTP-enabled switches in the same VTP domain. VTP servers store the VLAN information for the entire domain in NVRAM. The server is where VLANs can be created, deleted, or renamed for the domain.
What is VTP Client?
VTP clients function the same way as VTP servers, but you cannot create, change, or delete VLANs on a VTP client. A VTP client only stores the VLAN information for the entire domain while the switch is on. A switch reset deletes the VLAN information. You must configure VTP client mode on a switch.
What is VTP Transparent?
Transparent switches forward VTP advertisements to VTP clients and VTP servers. Transparent switches do not participate in VTP. VLANs that are created, renamed, or deleted on transparent switches are local to that switch only.
What is VTP Pruning?
VTP pruning increases network available bandwidth by restricting flooded traffic to those trunk links that the traffic must use to reach the destination devices. Without VTP pruning, a switch floods broadcast, multicast, and unknown unicast traffic across all trunk links within a VTP domain even though receiving switches might discard them.
VTP is an acronym for _________.
VLAN trunking protocol.
VLAN is a _______ messaging porotocol that maintains VLAN configuration consistency by managing the addition, deletion, and renaming of VLANs across multiple Cisco switches in a network.
VTP is a ___________ protocol available only on Cisco switches.
In VTP ________ mode, you can create, modify, and delete VLANs for the entire VTP domain.
In VTP ________ mode, the switch does not participate in VTP. However, the switch does forward VTP advertisements through trunk interfaces.
In VTP _____ mode, you cannot create, change, or delete VLANs.
In VTP _____ mode, VLAN configurations are not saved in NVRAM.
VTP ________ mode allows you to create, modify, and delete VLANs on the single switch without affecting the rest of the switches in your network.
VTP ________ mode is the default mode for a Cisco switch.
How many VTP versions are there?
3 (1, 2, and 3)
What is the default VTP version?
What Cisco command will allow you to view VTP settings?
show VTP status
A switch can be a member of how many domains?
What does a VTP frame consist of?
header field and a message field
The VTP information is inserted into the data field of an Ethernet frame. The Ethernet frame is then encapsulated as a 802.1Q trunk frame (or ISL frame). Each switch in the domain sends periodic advertisements out each trunk port to a reserved multicast address. These advertisements are received by neighboring switches, which update their VTP and VLAN configurations as necessary.
Will a VTP domain name change increment the revision number?
How often are summary advertisements sent by the VTP server?
every 5 minutes
What triggers a Subset Advertisement?
- -creating or deleting a VLAN
- -suspending or activating a VLAN
- -changing the name of a VLAN
- -changing the MTU of a VLAN
Which two statements are true about VTP pruning? (Choose two.)
1.Pruning is enabled by default.
2.Pruning can only be configured on VTP servers.
3.Pruning must be configured on all VTP servers in the domain.
4.VLANs on VTP client-mode switches will not be pruned.
5.Pruning will prevent unnecessary flooding of broadcasts across trunks.
2 and 5
How are VTP messages sent between switches in a domain?
1.Layer 2 broadcast
2.Layer 2 multicast
3.Layer 2 unicast
4.Layer 3 broadcast
5.Layer 3 multicast
6.Layer 3 unicast
Which two statements are true about the implementation of VTP? (Choose two.)
1.Switches must be connected via trunks.
2.The VTP domain name is case sensitive.
3.Transparent mode switches cannot be configured with new VLANs.
4.The VTP password is mandatory and case sensitive.
5.Switches that use VTP must have the same switch name.
1 and 2
What are two features of VTP client mode operation? (Choose two.)
1.unable to add VLANs
2.can add VLANs of local significance
3.forward broadcasts out all ports with no respect to VLAN information
4.can only pass VLAN management information without adopting changes
5.can forward VLAN information to other switches in the same VTP domain
1 and 5
Which three VTP parameters must be identical on all switches to participate in the same VTP domain? (Choose three.)
2, 5 and 6
What statement describes the default propagation of VLANs on a trunked link?
1.only the native VLAN
2.VLANs 1 to 1005
3.only VLAN 1
Which statement is true when VTP is configured on a switched network that incorporates VLANs?
1.VTP is only compatible with the 802.1Q standard.
2.VTP adds to the complexity of managing a switched network.
3.VTP allows a switch to be configured to belong to more than one VTP domain.
4.VTP dynamically communicates VLAN changes to all switches in the same VTP domain.
