What is the half life of a reaction?
The amount of time it takes for a quantity to fall to half its value as measured at the beginning of the time period
For a second order reaction, how does the half life behave?
It doubles every time
What is the differential form of the first order rate equation?
d[A]/dt = -k[A]
What is the integrated form of the first order rate equation?
[A] = [A]0 exp(-kt)
ln[A] = ln[A]0 - kt
What is the formula for the half life of a first order reaction?
t1/2 = ln(2)/k
What is the effect of temperature on the rate constant?
- Rate will increase with temperature because...
- 1. Molecules will be traveling at greater speeds.
- 2. More molecules have enough energy to react.
