1. CONVERT 7% INTO A DECIMAL.
.07

REMEMBER TO MOVE THE DECIMAL TO THE LEFT TWO TIMES!!

TECHNICALLY YOU DIVIDE THE NUMBER BY 100.

• EX: 67.5%
• = 67.5% / 100 = .675
• (DECIMAL 2 TO THE LEFT)
2. I= PRT

WHAT IS THE SIMPLE INTEREST IF
P IS 8500
R 7%
T 18 MONTHS
• P = 8500 = AMOUNT BORROWED
• R = 7% INTO DECIMAL = 7/100 = .07
• T = TIME IN YEARS. IF GIVEN MONTHS DIVIDE BY 12 = 18/12 = 1.5

• (8500)(.07)(1.5) =892.50
• SIMPLE INTEREST PER YEAR.
• 1. THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE.
• QUANTITY AND TOTAL COST. YOU NEED INDIVIDUAL COST, SO ASSIGN A VARIABLE FOR EVERY ITEM OR GROUP.
• 13B + 4T = 487

2. TAKE HOME IS THAT YOU WANT TO ELEMINATE ONE VARIABLE SO THAT YOU CAN PLUG IT IN AND SOLVE FOR THE OTHER.

3. YOU CAN DO THIS BY ADDITION, SUB, MULTI OR DIV. JUST REMEMBER THAT YOU HAVE TO DO IT TO EVERYTHING.

3. SUE HAS \$1.35 CONSISTING OF NICKELS AND DIMES. IF SHE HAS 9 MORE NICKELS THAN DIMES, HOW MANY NICKELS DOES SHE HAVE.
• IN COIN PROBLEMS CONVERT INTO CENTS.
• NICKEL = 5, DIME 10, ECT.

• (X + 9)= NICKLES
• = 5 ( X + 9)
• =(5X + 45)

• DO IT FOR EVERYTHING IN THE EQUATION!!
• LOOK AT THE 9 MORE NICKLES!!

4. THE TAKE HOME ON THIS IS THAT YOU USE ONE VARIABLE TO SOLVE FOR TWO THINGS.

• X = NICKELS.
• SO THE DIMES ARE WHATEVER IS LEFT FROM THE TOTAL MINUS THE NICKELS IS THE DIMES!
• 45 - X = DIMES

ALSO DON'T FORGET YOUR COIN VALUES TO EVERYTHING IN THE EQUATION!

• LOOK AT IT THIS WAY. YOUR LOOKING FOR A VARIABLE "X" OF THE EQUATION:
• UNIT * QUANTITY = TOTAL.
• YOU USUALLY HAVE TWO ITEMS, SO YOU'LL HAVE TWO EQUATIONS, BUT TOTAL IS THE SAME.

LOOK FOR 3 THINGS TO SET UP. 2 UNITS AND A TOTAL. PLUG VARIABLES IN AND GO.

HERE, DON'T LET THE RATIO FOOL YOU, IT STILL YOUR 2 UNITS!

5. HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN TO USE QUANTITY OF OR DOLLAR AMOUNT IN A QUESTION?
LOOK AT WHAT IS GIVEN. IF A DOLLAR AMOUNT IS GIVEN USE DOLLAR AMOUNT.

IF QUANTITY, LIKE A RATIO, THEN USE QUANTITY!

AFTER SETTING UP THE EQUATION, CHECK AND SEE IF BOTH SIDES ARE CONSISTENT IN USING THE SAME UNIT!
6. WHAT ARE TWO THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN AGE PROBLEMS.
1. IF A NUMBER OF YEARS IS GIVEN ADD TO IT.

• JAKE = X
• DAD =  X + 24

• IN 8 YEARS:
• JAKE= X + 8
• DAD= X + 32 ( 24 + 8)

• NUMBER 2:
• DAD WILL BE TWICE AS OLD AS JAKE WILL BE THEN.

• DOUBLE THE YOUNGER PERSONS AGE!!
• JAKE = 2(X+8)
• DAD = X + 32
7. HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH 2 VARIABLES?
ELIMINATE ONE!

THINK OF THE LANDSCAPING QUESTION.

• WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO TO ELIMINATE ONE OF THE VARIABLES?
• YOU HAD TO * -2 TO ONE EQUATION TO REMOVE 4T.
• REMEMBER TO MULTIPLY THE ENTIRE EQUATION!!!! BOTH SIDES!!!!

• (-2) (6B + 4T) = (232)
• =-12B  + (-4T) = (-464)
8. WHATS 10 % OF 70?
7

• REMEMBER MOVE 0 MOVE DECIMAL!!!
• 1 ZERO - 1 MOVE TO THE LEFT!!!
