  1. Antipsychotic Drugs
    • drugs used to treat schizophrenia and other forms of severe thought disorders
    • conventional drugs similar enough to dopamine to occupy the receptor sites and block activity (e.g. Thorazine)
    • Atypical antipsychotics are used for patients experiencing negative symptoms of schizophrenia, which target both the dopamine and serotonin receptors (Clozaril)
  2. Antianxiety Drugs
    • drugs used to control anxiety and agitation 
    • e.g. Xanax, Ativan
    • depresses central nervous system activity and is often used in combination with psychological therapy
    • criticism is that they reduce symptoms without resolving underlying problems
  3. Antidepressant drugs
    • drugs used to treat depression; also increasingly prescribed for anxiety
    • work by increasing the availability of norepinephrine or serotonin
    • Drugs such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil partially block the reabsorption and removal of serotonin from synapses
  4. Mood Stabilizing Drugs
    • Lithium can be effective for those suffering the emotional highs and lows of bipolar disorder
    • Criticism is that no one really knows why it works
