Chemical Nomenclature
The system of names used to distinguish compounds from each other and the rules needed to devise those names
Binary Compound
A compound in which only two elements are present
Binary Ionic Compound
an Ionic compound in which one element is metal and the other element is non metal
Fixed Charge Metal
A metal that only forms one type of positive ion and that ion always has the same magnitude
Variable Charge Metal
a metal that forms more than one type of positive ion, each ion having a different Magnitude
Example Fe
2+
and Fe
3+
Ternary Compound
A compound containing three different elements
Ternary Ionic Compound
A compound in which three elements are present; one element in a monoatomic ion and the others in a polyatomic ion
Binary Molecular Compound
A Compound in which two nonmetallic elements are present
Systematic Name
A name for a compound based on IUPAC Rules that conveys information about the composition of that compound
Example: H
2
O is Hydrogen Oxide
Common Name
A name for a compound that is not based on IUPAC Rules and that does not convey information about the composition of that compound
Example H
2
O is water
Acid
Hydrogen containing ternary molecular compound whose molecules yield Hydrogen ions when dissolved in water
Acids have Hydrogen listed as the first element in their formula
Non-oxyacid
A molecular compound composed of hydrogen and one or more non metals other than oxygen that produce H
+
ions in an aqueous solution
Non-oxyacids exist as both pure compounds and water solutions
HCl (g) is Hydrogen chloride
HCl (aq) is Hydrochloric acid
Oxyacid
A molecular compound composed of hydrogen, oxygen and one or more other elements that produce H
+
ions in an aqueous solution
