Behavioral Inhibition system (BIS)
Designed to inhibit behavior (amotivate), or "freeze"
Behavioral Activation system (BAS)
Designed to activate behavior (motivate), whether it be "fight", "flight" or some other behavior
Right frontal cortical activation
Associated with avoidance behaviors, negative affect
Left frontal cortical activation
Associated with approach behaviors, extroversion, positive affect
Someone who avoids social interaction tends to have stronger right frontal activity. Someone who engages others tends to have stronger left frontal activity
When one is engaged in social activity, their left frontal system engages. When one is engaged in avoiding activity (their right frontal system engages)
Differential activation of right v left cortical regions
- Characterized by a chronic pattern of disregard and violation for the rights of others:
- · Cognitive anomalies
- · Emotional disturbances
- · Behavioral problems
- · Need for achievement: dominance
- · Active behavioral activation systems
