  1. Structure
    Sometimes called maidenhair tree due to the fan-shaped leaves that have a sinus going through it= bilobed

    One genus; one species

    Can be 100 feet tall

    Each tree has tracheids; once central stem

    Two types of branches: 1. long shoots (main branches) (grows fast) and spur shoot (grows slowly, where most leaves seem to come off of; not many on the main shoot); gives leaves a clumped appearance
  2. Location
    not common in many places; at once onlyloated in China
  3. Unisexual or bisexual
    Separate male and female trees

    Female produced on megasporophyll, no strobilus (cone); only two ovules produced

    Male and female parts occur on different leaves

    Male produce strobii, which don’t look big; they are loose; produced right at the tip of the spur shoots and never attached to long shoot

    Fertilization does not have to happen right away; can fall off tree and still eventually fertilize

    ornamental

    really resistant leaves that can withstand the air of cities
