  1. Adson Maneuver
    • Explanation: With client seated or standing the practitioner locates the client's radial pulse on the affected side and brings the client's arm into extension and lateral rotation.  The client then turns their head as far as possible to affected side and tilts chin up.  The client then takes a deep breath and holds it.
    • Tests: thoracic outlet syndrome between anterior and middle scalenes
  2. Allen Test
    • Explanation: With the client seated with elbow flexed to 90o and the arm in 90o of abduction and externally rotated the practitioner locates the radial pulse and has client turn head to opposite side.
    • Tests: thoracic outlet syndrome between anterior and middle scalenes
  3. Military Brace Test
    • Explanation: The client is seated or standing and pulls scapulae together so the arms are extended and the scapulae are fully retracted.  This position is held for approximately 30-60 seconds.  You can do the test with varying degrees of shoulder abduction to produce different levels of pressure on neurovascular structures.
    • Tests: thoracic outlet syndrome between clavicle and first rib
  4. Wright Abduction Test
    • Explanation: Client is seated with the arm on the affected side lifted as far into abduction as possible.  The client holds the arm in this position for approximately 1 minute.  Some variations include:
    • ulnar nerve-elbow is flexed and wrist fully extended
    • radial nerve-elbow is extended and wrist is flexed
    • median nerve-elbow and wrist are fully extended
    • Tests: pectoralis minor syndrome
  5. Spurling Test
    • Explanation: Client is seated on table and practitioner applies gentle pressure toward the floor in each of the following positions:
    • 1. compression with head in neutral position
    • 2. compression with head in partial extension and rotation to affected side
    • 3. compression with head in lateral flexion to affected side
    • Tests: severity of herniated disc
  6. Cervical Distraction Test
    • Explanation: With client seated on table with head in neutral position the practitioner places hands on occiput and forehead and provides moderate lifting force.
    • Tests: pressure on nerve roots
  7. Slump Test
    • Explanation: The client is seated on the table with hands clasped behind back.  From this position the client slumps forward with the upper thoracic region, next the head and neck are fully flexed.  The leg on the affected side is then extended at the knee and the foot is dorsiflexed.
    • Tests: nerve compression or tension
