Show Answers:

  1. Apley Scratch Test
    • Explanation: With the client standing have them bring one arm into abduction and lateral rotation (scratching shoulder) and the other into adduction and medial rotation.  Both arms are done in the upper and lower position and range is compared bilaterally.
    • Tests: abduction/adduction and lateral/medial rotation of shoulder joint
  2. Drop-Arm Test
    • Explanation: The client is standing and raises the affected arm to 90o of abduction, practitioner watches the movement for catches and other things.  The client then slowly lowers the arm back to anatomical position, practitioner watches the movement.  In some cases the practitioner may also add slight resistance to the motion.
    • Tests: supraspinatus
  3. Hawkins-Kennedy Impingement Test
    • Explanation: The client is standing facing the practitioner.  Practitioner brings client's shoulder and elbow into 90o of flexion, from this point the humerus is medial rotated until the end range of motion.
    • Tests: shoulder impingement
  4. Empty Can Test
    • Explanation: Client faces practitioner.  Practitioner brings both arms into 45o of horizontal abduction.  The client is asked about pain or discomfort.  Practitioner then has client medially rotate the arms as if dumping a can.  Again the client is asked about pain or discomfort.  The position is then held while the practitioner attempts to push both arms down with moderate effort.
    • Tests: shoulder impingement
  5. Neer Impingement Test
    • Explanation: Client faces practitioner as practitioner slowly brings client's arm into full forward flexion.
    • Tests: bursa, long head biceps tendon, coracoacromial ligament
  6. Speed's Test
    • Explanation: Client stands with 90o of shoulder flexion, elbow fully extended, and the forearm supinated.  Client attempts to hold position as the practitioner applies downward pressure.
    • Tests: long head biceps tendon
  7. Cross Over Test
    • Explanation: With the client standing or seated the practitioner brings the client's arm into full horizontal adduction.
    • Tests: acromioclavicular, trapezoid, and conoid ligaments
