  1. Tell me how you would check the tyres so that they have sufficient tread depth and their general condition is safe for use on the road?
Firstly, I'd check that there are no cuts or bulges on the tyre and, using a tread depth gauge I'd make sure that there is at least 1.6 mm of tread depth across the central 3/4s of the tyre and across the entire circumference.
  2. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and identify how you would check that the engine has enough oil.
Pull the dipstick out here, wipe it with a tissues, put it back in, take it out again and see if the oil level is between the maximum and minimum markers.

If the oil is low, you would top it up by taking this cap off and filling up the oil
  3. Identify the windscreen was resorvoir and tell me how you would check the level.
To identify the windscreen wash reservoir, look for a blue lid with a picture of a windscreen and some water squirting out.

Check the level by looking to see whether the fluid is between the two markers.
  4. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check the engine has the correct level.
The lid for the engine coolant level has usually got a triangle on it, often there's a little temperature guage inside the triangle.

You would check the engine has the correct level by seeing if the engine coolant is between the maximum and minimum markers.
  5. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydrolic brake fluid
You can usually identify the brake fluid as having a yellow cap , with an octagan inside the yellow cap and a circle inside that.

The fluid should lie between the maximum and minimum marker.
  6. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working correctly.
Press the hazard warning button, as this will show all of my direction indicators on the car.

Walk round and check the indicators.
  7. How would you check that the tail lights and head lights are working?
    TK get out and check.
  8. How would you check that the horn is working?
Normally the horn is here. I'd just press it to see if it is working, and it is.
  9. How would you check the break lights are working?
I'd turn the key towards the bonnet, which turns the electrics on but not the engine. I'll press the break pedal now and ask you to go out and and check whether the break lights at the back of the car are working.
  10. How would you know there is a problem with your anti lock breaking system?
I would turn the electrics on. An amber abs lights should turn on and then off again. If it stays on then there is a problem with the anti lock breaking system
  11. How would you set all the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively
    TK
  12. How would you clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wiper?
    TK:
  13. How would you switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them.
    TK:

An amber light that is sort of in the shape of a rocket should come on.

These lights should only be used when visibility is reduced to 100 meters or below.
  14. How would you check that the breaks are working before starting a journey?
When the engines on, press the breaks. They shouldn't feel spongy and the vehicle should not move to one side.
  15. How do you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted?
The top of the head rest should be level with your eyes or ears. Some head rests aren't adjustable, but if I do need to adjust it then TK
  16. How would you check the parking break for excessive wear?
I'd put my foot on the break pedal so that I don't roll back. I'll put the handbrake down then bring it up so that it is at the end of its working travel, so that it doesnt come up any higher. I will let go of the break pedal and if the car is secured then the parking break is working.
  17. How would you check that the power assisted steering is working.
Put gentle pressure on the steering wheel once the engine is started this should result in slight but noticeable movement.
  18. How would you switch your head lights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know that your main beam is on while you are in the car.
    TK

You know that the main beam is on because the blue warning lights will show.
  19. Where would you find out what the recomended tyre pressures for this car are and how the tyre pressure should be checked.
You can find out what the recomended tyre pressures are in the car manufacturers manual.

You can check the tyre pressure using a tyre pressure guage.
