  1. Iliopsoas muscles:

    Action: prime movers for flexing thigh or trunk; important postural muscle
    • Iliacus
    • Psoas major
  2. Ilicus: ilium

    Action: prime movers for flexing thigh or for flexing trunk on thigh during  bow
    • O: iliac fossa and crest, lateral sacrum
    • I: femur on and immeadiatly below lesser trochanter of femur via iliopsoas tendon
  3. Psoas major: loin muscle- larger

    Action: prime movers for flexing thigh or for flexing trunk on thigh during a bow; important postural muscle
    • O: by fleshy strips from transverse process, bodies and discs of lumbar vertebrae and T12
    • I: lesser trochanter of femur via iliopsoas tendon
  4. Sartorius: tailor

    Action: flexes, abducts, and laterally rotates thigh; weak knee flexor; known as tailor muscle as it effects cross legged position
    • O: anterior superior iliac spine 
    • I: winds around medial aspect of knee and inserts into medial aspect of proximal tibia
  5. Adductor magnus: moves toward midline- large

    Action: anterior parts adduct, medially rotate, and flex thigh; posterior part is a synergist of hamstrings in thigh extension
    • O: ischial and pubic rami, and ischial tuberosity 
    • I: linea aspera and adductor tubercle of femur
  6. Adductor longus: move toward midline- long

    Action: adducts, flexes and medially rotates thigh
    • O: pubis near pubic symphysis 
    • I: linea aspera
  7. Adductor brevis: move toward midline- short

    Action: adducts and medially rotates thigh
    • O: body of inferior ramus of pubis
    • I: linea aspera above adductor longus
  8. Pectineus: comb

    Action: adducts, flexes, and medially rotates thigh
    • B: pectineal line of pubis (and superior ramus)
    • I: inferior from lesser trochanter to the linea aspera of posterior aspect of femur
  9. Gracilis: slender

    Action: adducts thigh, flexes and medially rotates thigh, especially during walking; flexes knee
    • O: inferior ramus and body of pubis and adjacent ischial ramus
    • I: medial surface of tibia just inferior to its medial condyle

    Composed of

    Action: extends knee
    • Rectus femoris
    • Vastud lateralis

    • Vastus intermedius

    I: 
    all insert on the patella and tibial tuberosity
  11. Rectus femoris: straight- femur

    Action: extends knee and flexes thigh at hip
    • O: anterior inferior iliac spine and superior margin of acetabulum 
    • I: patella and tibial tuberosity via patellar ligament
  12. Vastus lateralis: large- lateral 

    Action: extends and stabilizes knee
    • O: greater trochanter, intertrochanteric line, linea aspera
    • I: patella and tibial tuberosity
  13. Vastus medialis: large- medial

    Action: extends knee; inferior fibers stabilize patella
    • O: linea aspera, intertrochanteric line 
    • I: patella and tibial tuberosity
  14. Vastus intermedius: large- intermediate 

    Action: extends knee
    • O: anterior and lateral surfaces of proximal femur shaft
    • I: patella and tibial tuberosity
  15. Tensor fascia latae: to make tense- band- wide

    Action: flexes and abducts thigh; rotates thigh medially; and steadies the knee and trunk on thigh
    • O: anterior aspect of iliac crest and anterior superior iliac spine
    • I: iliotibial tract
  16. Gluteus maximus: buttock- largest

    Action: major extensor of thigh; laterally rotates and abducts thigh
    • O: dorsal ilium, sacrum, and coccyx
    • I:  gluteal tuberosity of femur; iliotibial tract
  17. Gluteus medius: buttock- middle

    Action: abducts and medially rotates thigh; steadies pelvis
    • O: between anterior and posterior gluteal lines on lateral surface of ilium
    • I: by short tendon into lateral aspect of greater trochanter of femur
  18. Gluteus minimus: buttock- smallest

    Action: abducts and medially rotates thigh; steadies pelvis
    • O: between anterior and inferior gluteal lines on  external surface of ilium 
    • I: anterior border of greater trochanter of femur
  19. Piriformis: pear-shaped 

    Action: rotates extended thigh laterally; when hip is flexed, can assist in abduction of thigh
    • O: anterolateral surface of sacrum
    • I: superior border of greater trochanter of femur
  20. Obturator externus: obturator foramen- outside

    Action: rotates extended thigh laterally; when hip is flexed, can assist in abduction of thigh
    • O: outer surfaces of obturator membrane pubis, ischium, and margins of obturator foramen
    • I: by a tendon into trochanteric fossa of posterior femur
  21. Obturator internus: obturator foramen- inside

    Action: rotates extended thigh laterally; when hip is flexed, can assist in abduction of thigh
    • O: inner surface of obturator membrane, greater sciatic notch, and margins of obturator foramen 
    • I: greater trochanter in front of piriformis
  22. Gemellus inferior and superior: twin- below and above

    Action: rotates extended thigh laterally; when hip is flexed, can assist in abduction of thigh
    • O: ischial spine (superior); ischial tuberosity (inferior) 
    • I: greater trochanter of femur
  23. Quadratus femoris: four sided square- femur

    Action: rotates thigh laterally and stabilizes hip joint
    • O: ischial tuberosity 
    • I: trochanteric crest of femur
  24. Hamstrings
     
    Composed of:

    Action: prime movers of thigh extension and knee flexion
    • Biceps femoris
    • Semitendinosus
    • Semimembranosus
  25. Biceps femoris: two heads- femur

    Action: extends thigh and flexes knee, laterally rotates leg, especially when knee is fixed
    • O: ischial tuberosity (long head); linea aspera and distal femur (short head)
    • I: common tendon inserts onto head of fibula and lateral condyle of tibia
  26. Semitendinosus: half- tendon

    Action: extends thigh at hip; flexes knee; with semimenbranosus, medially rotates leg
    • O: ischial tuberosity in common with long head of biceps femoris 
    • I: medial aspect of upper tibial shaft
  27. Semimembranosus: half- membrane

    Action: extends thigh and flexes knee; medially rotates leg
    • O: ischial tuberosity
    • I: medial condyle of tibia, via oblique popliteal ligament to lateral condyle of femur
