how does the inner ear convey sound to the auditory cortex?
Inner hair cells -> cestibulocochlear nerve -> olive (bilaterally but mostly contraleteral) -> inferior colliculous -> medial geniculate north of the thalamus -> auditory cortex (temporal lobe)
What are the two “streams” projecting from the auditory cortex? (dorsal stream)
parietal lobe, for spatial location of sounds (where)
What are the two “streams” projecting from the auditory cortex? (ventral stream)
temporal lobe, for components of sound (what)
What receptors do tastants use to signal cells?
Inotropic (salty, sour) and metabotropic (sweet, bitter) receptors
What are odornts
Chemical senses that activate metabotropic receptors (cause enzyme activation which opens ionotropic receptor pores, with EPSP)
Where is primary taste cortex?
Somatosensory cortex/parietal lobe
Where is primary smell cortex
In the uncus
What is vomeronasal system? What does it detect?
Chemical signaling; pheromones
