  1. Anti-Anxiety Drugs
    • tranquilizers: Treatment of anxiety
    • benzodiazepines, ex: Xanax and Ativan (increase GABA)
  2. Antidepressants
    • Treatment for depression
    • Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors: increase serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine
    • Tricyclic antidepressants: inhibit some NT reuptake
    • Selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs): ex, Prozac
  3. Antipsychotics
    • Neuroleptics: help with schizophrenia and other psychosis
    • Block and bind to dopamine receptors
    • Tardive dyskinesia: side effect. Involuntary muscle twitching
    • Ex, clozapine
  4. Assessment
    • Examination of a persons mental state to diagnose possible psychological disorders
    • Diagnosis: disease
    • Prognosis: course and probably outcome
  5. Behavioral Therapy
    • Treatment based on premise that behavior is learned and therefore can be unlearned through classical and operant conditioning
    • Social skills training: elicit desired behavior during therapy
    • Modeling: by therapist of desired behavior
  6. Client-Centered Therapy
    • empathic approach to therapy
    • encourages people to fulfill individual potentials for personal growth through greater self-understanding
    • Motivational interviewing: 1-2 interviews
  7. Cognitive Model
    • Emotional disorders are result of maladaptive thought processes
    • Activating event + Belief = Consequence
    • Treatment: cognitive and cognitive-behavioral therapy, understand relationship between thoughts and feelings, identify and challenge distorted/maladaptive thoughts
