  1. Hyoid bone
    • • does not articulate directly with any other skeletal elements
    • • highly movable, strong bony anchor for muscles and soft tissue structures
    • • important in swallowing, phonation, keep airway open
    • • ---elevates and depresses
  2. Hyoid muscle weakness
    • • Speech
    • • Could be bc of stroke
    • • Eating drinking (nutrition)
    • • ---Bc hyoid muscles control tongue
    • • Swallowing
    • • ---Choking
    • • ---Aspirate food or liquid into lungs
  3. Larynx
    • • Connection between the pharynx and the trachea; cartilages connected to
    • • Located at C3-C6
    • • Prevents foreign bodies from entering the airways
    • • Designed for the production of sound (phonation)
    • • Formed by 9 cartilages: 3 paired and 3 unpaired
    • • ---epiglottis, thyroid, cricoid, and paired arytenoid and cornicular
  4. Thyroid cartilage
    • • Wide anteriorly but not a complete ring
    • • Level of C4 and C5
  5. Cricoid cartilage
    • • Level of C6
    • • Described as signet ring
    • • ---Narrow anterolateral and wide posteriorly
  6. Sphincter muscles
    • • Muscular tube on posterior aspect
    • • Many different layers
    • • Connected by sphincter (stricture?) and membranous connective structures
    • • Moves food down esophagus
  7. Thyrohyoid membrane
    • • Superior rim of thyroid cartilage to inferior border of hyoid bones
    • • Moves everything as a unit
  8. Cricothyroid ligament/ conus elasticus
    • • Superior border of cricoid cartilage to inferior border of thyroid cartilage
    • • Part of conus elasticus vocal cords
    • • ---Tracheotomy makes it difficult to speak bc difficult for sound to go past elastic fibers
  9. Thyroid gland
    • • Highly vascular
    • • ---bc metabolic gland
    • • Lobes connected by isthmus
    • • Location:C5- T1 (isthmus at 2nd/3rd tracheal ring)
    • • Circulation: sup/inf (most) thyroid arteries
    • • made of thyroid epithelial cells, which secrete thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine), and parafollicular (C cells), which secrete calcitonin
    • • contains laryngeal branch of vagus nerve (goes to vocal cords)
  10. Parathyroid glands
    • • 4 glands located on the posterior surface of the thyroid lobes
    • • superior parathyroids supplied by the superior thyroid artery
    • • inferior parathyroids are supplied by the inferior thyroid artery
    • • cells are organized in cords and secrete parathyroid hormone
  11. Parotid gland
    • • starts in face and extends below mandible
    • • salivary gland
  12. Submandibular gland
    • • in submandibular triangle
    • • salivary gland
  13. Lymphatics
    • Drains head/ brain, neck, face, mediastum from heart
  14. Epiglottis
    • • Flap or wave (leaf like structure)
    • • Starts a C6, extends up to C2
    • • Prevent food from going down respiratory passage
    • • Respiratory passage way divide at C6 to form opening of esophagus
    • • Runs behind trachea
