When inspecting the patient's stoma, what do you want to note?
Size (stabilizes within 6-8 weeks).
Keep the skin around the stoma site clean and dry.
What can you teach to the patient about colostomy care?
Encourage and avoid?
*Keep patient as free of odors as possible.
Empty appliance frequently.
- clean and dry stoma site
- drink 2 qts (or L) of water daily
- diet and exercise
- Resume normal activity (work, sex, etc.)
- foods high in fiber
- foods that cause diarrhea or flatus
What are some "comfort measures" or nursing actions?
Use meds as needed.
Apply ointments or astringent (witch hazel) to decrease itching and skin irritation/inflammation.
Use suppositories that contain anesthetics.
