The flashcards below were created by user HLHSASCC on FreezingBlue Flashcards. What would you like to do?

  1. What is the definiton of Empirical formula?
The simplest (whole number) ratio of atoms of each element in a compound.
  2. What is the definition of Molecular Formula?
The actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule of a compound. (Molecular formula is always a whole number times by the empirical formula of the compound).
  3. What is the Structural Formula of Butane?
    CH3CH2CH2CH3
  4. What does the Structural Formula of a compound tell us?
Where each atom is located in the molecule.
  5. What is a Homologous Series?
    • - A family of carbon compounds with similar chemical properties because they have the same functional group.
    • - Each member differs from the previous member by CH2
    • - They all have the same general formula
    • - There is a gradual change in physical properties (e.g melting/boiling point) down the series.
  6. What is the Displayed Formula of but-2-ene?
