  1. Tango Time Signature
    • Written as a fraction appearing at the start of a piece of music
    • The top (first) number indicates the number of beats in a bar
    • The bottom (second) number indicates the value of the beats
    • Tango is 2/4 time = 2 beats of crochet value to the bar
  2. Tango Tempo
    • The speed of the music counted in bars or beats per minute
    • Tango is played at 33 to 34 bars/minute (or 66 - 68 beats/minute)
  3. Counting in Beats for Tango
    • 1 and 2 and, 1 and 2 and, 1 and 2 and etc
    • A Slow count = 1 beat
    • A Quick count = 1/2 beat
    • An & equals 1/4 beat
  4. Counting in Beats and Bars for Tango
    • 1 and 2 and, 2 and 2 and, 3 and 2 and, etc where the first number denotes the bar while the 2nd the remainder of the bar
    • A Slow count = 1 beat

  5. Tango Timing
    • The amount of time given to each step or action in relation to the music

  6. Tango Rhythm
    The regular recurrence of an accented beat or beats in the music that gives character to the music and dance
  7. Tango Accented Beats
    The accent in Tango is equal on each beat
  8. Syncopation
    Splitting a beat or beats during a figure
  9. Rotation
    Movement of the body in a circular motion around a central axis to Right or Left
  10. Spin
    A continuous turn to Right or Left over 2 or more steps
  11. Positions of Feet
    • this refers to the position of one foot relative to the other at the end of a step
    • Foot Positions:
    • Forward
    • Back
    • Side
    • Side & slightly forward
    • Side & slightly back
    • RF (LF) closes to LF (RF) Slightly back (forward) with or without weight
  12. Outside Partner (OP)
    A forward step taken to the partner's right side
  13. Preparing to Step Outside Partner
    this is a step taken forward in a slightly more open position than a normal step
  14. Left or Right Side Leading
    • This is when the same side of the body moves with the stepping foot.
    • The step is taken either forward of back, normally in preparation to step outside partner
  15. Contrary Body Movement Position (CBMP)
    • The placing of the stepping foot, forward or backward, on to the line of the other foot
    • This gives the appearance of CBM having been used but without turning the body
    • CBMP is used on all OP steps to ensure a good line and contact
    • In Tango when in line with partner,CBMP is used on the majority of Forward Walks on LF and Backward walks on RF
    • 'forward and across' in CBMP means that the moving foot travels more across the line of the other foot. This applies to steps in PP only
  16. Contrary Body Movement (CBM)
    • The body action used to initiate turn
    • It is moving the opposite side of the body toward the stepping foot, either forward or backward
  17. Promenade Position (PP)
    • The man's right and lady's left side are in contact with the lady slightly behind the man's right side
    • PP is incorporated in the 'positions of feet' column in the charts
    • The classic Tango PP is controlled and compact; the knee of the keg without weight will veer inwards toward the supporting knee; both body and feet will have the same alignment
    • Two simple methods to achieve PP:
    • 1: Walk on RF, LF to side without weight in PP
    • 2: from any closed finish, turn sharply to PP
  18. Fallaway Position
    Both man and lady stepping backward in PP on either foot
  19. Direction and Alignment (compulsory)
    • Direction:
    • Direction is the movement of the foot in relation to the room
    • Alignment:
    • This refers to the foot or feet and describes where the feet are Facing, Backing or Pointing in relation to the room at the end of a step
    • Pointing will occur when on the inside of a turn having taken a side step, turning the foot more than the body
    • Difference:
    • Essentially, Direction is active, descibing the which way the foort is moving during a step whereas Alignment is stationary, describing where the foot is once it's moved.
  20. Line of Dance
    • The line of forward progression round the ballroom in an anti-clockwise direction.
    • The following alignments are used for examination purposes
    • 1: Facing LoD or Backing against LoD
    • 2: Facing DW or Backing DC against LoD
    • 3: Facing Wall or Backing Centre
    • 4: Facing DW against LoD or Backing DC
    • 5: Backing LoD or Facing agaist LoD
    • 6: Facing DC against LoD or Backing DW
    • 7: Facing Centre or Backing Wall
    • 8: Facing DC or Backing DW against LoD
  21. Amounts of Turn
    In Tango the amount of turn is not divided between steps but given overall in the figure of part of the figure
  22. Footwork
    • This describes the part or parts of the foot or feet in contact with the floor during a step
    • All normal Forward Walks and Steps 1 & 2 of Promenade figures: Heel
    • When closing the feet: Whole Foot
    • When closing in PP: Ball Heel (exception in higher syllabii)
    • Backward Steps with as side lead: Inside edge of Ball Heel
    • Backward Steps in CBMP: Ball Heel
    • When turning to the Left: Man - Ball Heel, Lady - Whole Foot - Exception in Progressive Side Step Reverse Turn where it's Inside Edge of Foot for Man and Lady
    • Other steps vary, some are Inside Edge of Foot, others are Inside Edge of Ball Heel
  23. Poise and Hold
    • Man's: .
    • Join the Left hand in Lady's Right hand between thumb and forefinger,
    • - fingers slightly closed
    • - Left Forearm is angled slightly inward
    • The lady is held more to the man's Right than in other ballroom dances
    • - the Right hand is positioned a little further round the lady's back
    • Stand facing the wall with Feet Closed
    • - Slip RF slightly back
    • - Turn feet and body to the left to face DW with supporting knee compressed
    • The body form the hips upward is toned with head to the Left
    • - Right side slightly Forward
    • Lady's: .
    • Join the Right hand in man's Left hand with fingers neatly grouped
    • Place Left hand on the back of the man's upper arm, just below the shoulder blade
    • - palm facing downward
    • Stand backing the wall with Feet Closed
    • - Slip LF slightly forward
    • - Turn feet and body to the left to back DW with supporting knee compressed
    • The body form the hips upward is toned with head to the Left
    • - Right side slightly Forward
  24. Balance
    the correct distribution of the weight over the foot or feet when moving or stationary
  25. Tango Forward Walk (compulsory)
    • Man's: LF Walk Described, RF Walk is same but opposite
    • Achieve the correct poise and balance with weight on RF
    • Moving the body forward, release the Left heel from the floor by flexing the Left knee
    • Move the LF sharply forward just clear of the floor, place the heel onto the floor, straightening the knee
    • Immediately lower to end with the foot flat and the knee slightly flexed.
    • Delay movement of the RF for as long as the music will allow
    • Move the RF sharply forward, the knee flexing as it passes the Left leg.
    • Continue as above with the RF
    • Lady's: the action is the same as the Man's but he is leading and remains in control throughout
  26. Tango Backward walk (compulsory)
    • Man's: RF Walk Described, LF Walk is same but opposite
    • Achieve the correct poise and balance with weight on LF
    • Release the heel of the RF by slightly flexing the Right knee
    • Move the RF sharply back, just clear of the floor
    • Place the Right Ball then lower the Heel and release the Left Toe
    • Delay movement of the LF for as long as the music will allow
    • Move the LF sharply back, the knee flexing as it passes the Right leg.
    • Continue as above with the RF
    • Due to the forward poise, on some steps the Heel of the front foot will release, not the Toe.
    • Lady's: the action is the same as the Man's but he is leading and remains in control throughout
  27. Tango Characteristics
    • Footwork:
    • Although the footwork on forward walks is given as heel, slight pressure will be felt on the Outside Edge of the LF and Inside Edge of the RF
    • On backward walks the slight pressure will be felt on the Inside Edge of the LF and Outside Edge of the RF
    • Due to the hold and positioning of the Man and Lady:
    • Forward Walks on LF will be taken in CBMP
    • Forward Walks on RF will be taken with Right Side leading
    • Backward Walks with LF will be taken with Left Side Leading
    • Backward Walks on RF will be taken with CBMP
    • (exceptions are shown in the charts)
    • Due to the natural curve of the walks:
    • commencing and finishing alighnments are different
    • as such, only Direction will be given
    • (exceptions are shown in the charts)
    • Other aspects:
    • There is no body swing in Tango
    • There is no rise and fall in Tango
    • There is no sway in Tango
  28. Closed Turn
    • A turn when the feet are closed on the 3rd step with a change of weight
    • E.g. 1-3 Basic Reverse Turn for the Lady
  29. Open Turn
    • A turn when the feet are open on the 3rd step
    • E.g. 1-3 Open Reverse Turn Lady Outside as Man
  30. Closed Finish
    • When the feet are closed with a change of weight on the last step of the figure
    • E.g. Step 4 Closed Promenade as Man and Lady
  31. Open Finish
    • When the last step of a figure is taken in CBMP outside partner
