Show Answers:

  1. Celestial Object
    • Any object in space
    • Eg. the Sun, planets, the Moon
  2. Astronomer
    Someone who studies celestial bodies
  3. Revolution
When one celestial body orbits another
  4. Roatation
When a celestial body spins around its axis
  5. Constellation
    • A group of stars the appear from Earth to form distinct patters
    • Stars appear to be close (because they are on the same line of sight) but are actually light-years away
  6. Apparent Magnitude
The brightness of a star as seen from Earth
  7. Light-Year
    • The distance light travels/year
    • Speed of light is 300 000 km/s and light travels 9.5 x 1012
  8. Asterism
    • A small group of stars that form a distinct patter within or between constellations
    • Eg. summer triangle, big dipper, little dipper
  9. Pointer Star
    • Pointer stars point towards other stars
    • Eg. Polaris at the end of the big dipper point to the (current) northern star
  10. Circumpolar
A constellation that can be seen all year round
  11. Zenith
The constellation that appears when you look straight up
  12. Tides
The rising and falling of ocean waters results from the Moon's gravity and the Earth's gravity
  13. Phases of the Moon
  14. Lunar Eclipse
    • When the Sun, Moon and Earth are arranged as follows: right = Sun, middle = Earth, left = Moon
    • Divided into full or partial. This is decided by whether the moon is in the penumbra (partial shadow) or the umbra (full shadow)
    • Full Moon
    • Twice a year on average
    • SAFE
  15. Solar Eclipse
    • When the Sun, Moon and Earth are arranged as follows: right = Sun, middle = Moon, left = Earth
    • Shadow of Moon falls on Earth
    • New Moon
    • Happens twice a year but the shadow is so small is it often in remote areas and are hard to find
    • NOT SAFE
  16. Why We Have Seasons
    • We have seasons because the Earth is tilted at 23o
    • When we are titled towards the Sun we receive more direct light causing warm seasons
    • When we are titled away we receive less direct light causing colder seasons
  17. Planets
    • Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars are inner planets
    • Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune are outer planets
    • Inner and Outer are separated by the asteroid belt
  18. Solar Sytem
    • Our collection of planets that orbit our Sun (heliocentric)
    • Used to be thought that Earth was at the center of the solar system (geocentric)
  19. Retrograde Motion
    • When planets appear to go east-west instead of west-east
    • This is due to the inner planets passing the outer ones in revolution
    • Appears almost as a loop
  20. Astronomical Units
  21. Orbital Radius
  22. omet
  23. Asteroid
  24. Meteroid
  25. Meteor
  26. Metoerite
  27. Trans-Neptunian Object
